Petrol Cap - pain in the ass!
« on: June 17, 2012, 09:18:57 am »
Morning guys,

Ive been meaning to put this up for a while but keep forgetting.

When filling up the car, does anyone else have the issue with the petrol filler cap cable being all twisted that it wont sit on the petrol flap properly and find you have to untwist the cable??

In theory, the cable shouldnt get twisted as it isn't fixed to the filler cap as such, its attached via a floating ring (not sure what the proper name is! im sure you know what i mean) so that only the cap spins round.

Does anyone else experience this? Its really bugging me - it happens every time i fill up and im sure it never happened on the Mk4!!

My next question is does anyone know if the petrol cap and the cable from a Mk4 fit the MK5?

Thanks

Rich

It'll be even more annoying if you forgot to put the cap back on after filling up

Hopefully wont be a problem as every car i have owned so far i have had to put the cap on top of the petrol pumps and havent forgot yet. Only problem is the missus is driving the car aswell now, and she is the type of person that will end up forgeting :)

Not really much of an issue for me.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

my 8P one twists too (i'd imagine it's the same part)

weirdly tho, my old 8P 1.6 didn't do that...

Yes same thing happens to me. It's twisted and when I hang it onto the flap when filling up it falls off and hits the bodywork. It's just about as annoying as the boot lock..drives me mad.

well, after seeing pics of the Mk4 cap, i think i can see why the lanyward twists on the MK5.

on the mk5, the lanyard is mounted right next to filler cap (directly onto the body of the car). on the MK4, it is mounted on the hinge of the flap. So, on the MK5, the lanyard is stretched out and under tension more when you are trying to sit the cap on the flap. On the Mk4, the lanyard has more slack so even though it is twisted, it is far less noticeable and has less effect on the cap not resting properly on the flap.

In essence, the lanyard is too short.

The only decent solution is to find a way of extending the lanyward... or finding another model in the VAG range that has the longer lanyard..

it falls off and hits the bodywork.

Buying petrol GTI style:

Pull up, pop fuel release.
Get out of car.
Untwist cap.
Balance cap on flap.
Remove pump and insert nozzle...fnarr.
Start filling.
At a random point during the fill listen for the distinctive wallop; bounce; scrape
Swear and hold cap in other hand for remainder of fill.
Finish fill, replace cap.
Admire fresh scratches in paintwork.
Pay for petrol and a Wispa.
