VW Racing big brake kit..
« on: June 04, 2009, 06:47:12 pm »
Hope Robin doesn't mind.. I have used your format for the review!

Anyways here we go!

This is a review of the new VW Racing brake package that is available for the Golf MK5 platform.

Heres a picture of the brakes installed on my car!

And some pics of the brakes off the car (off VW Racings website, hope you dont mind)

CHOICES:

When it comes to big brakes the market is pretty flooded.. From a cheap and cheerful OEM MK5 R32 brake conversion to 8 pot Brembo calipers and ceramic discs!! I took a long while deciding on these brakes but as soon as I had a drive in the VW Racing demo car I knew this was the kit for me!

WHY?

My car is hardly standard and the stock brakes have a pretty hard time with the standard car so for me it needed to be done. These are not only safer but make driving the car a lot more enjoyable and the feeling of confidence that you have when driving is amazing, knowing that you have the best chance of stopping if you really need to!

Also im planning on using the car at a couple of events throughout the year on track and that would have completely destroyed the stock brakes but now I know that I can drive as hard as I want and have no issues with the braking!

SOURCING:

The brakes are available directly and exclusively through VW Racing

Web: VWRacing / RacingLine

Phone: 01908 210088 Mark Farmer

Cost: £2464.29 inc Vat + Labour

INSTALLATION:

I had the brakes installed at VW Racing but its a relatively straight forward job of bolting them on. Just be sure to bleed the system well and make sure that you bed the discs / pads in to the specified procedure.

PLUS POINTS:

The obvious really..

Being able to stop! Very very quickly!!

Oh, and they look pretty nice too!!

MINUS POINTS:

You may need to upgrade your seats to stay in them a little better!! Apart from that, they are simply awesome!!

SUMMARY:

100% the right choice when it comes to a upgrade brake package for this car. I dont see any reason why these brakes wouldn't fit with all of the Golf V platform cars either as they are all interchangeable.

Its really rounded the car off nicely and I have lots more confidence on the brakes!

If you still can't decide, go and drive the VW Racing demo car and that will make your mind up for you!!

Very nice review thanks!

A few questions if you don't mind,

What size is the disc and what size of wheels at a minimum do you think need to clear the width of your VWR caliper?

If you were comparing the caliper on the VWR kit to say the caliper of the 'big red' caliper used on the 993 Turbo Porsche (which is one of the most common big brake kit calipers used in after market kits), would you say it's thinner?

What is the pad availability like for the kit?

Are there other options for the discs?

They are 355mm and pads are readily available..

Dont think there is another option on discs? How come?

The clearance is good, for example on the team dynamics wheels there is a good 15mm spoke clearance, not sure about standard wheels though!

Hi,

Ohh nothing really - it's just that some BBKs give you disc options, thats all. Like zinc coated or not, slotted, drilled or plain  - that sort of thing.

The VVR kit is based upon a 6 piston set-up right?
