Engine fans
« on: June 20, 2012, 10:34:29 pm »
Hi Folks, anyone know if there's a sure and fast way of checking to see if BOTH your engine fans are working as they should?? I've had someone recently advise me that one is only working and having to work twice as hard sometimes to make up for the other 'broken' one!? I think my thermostat is a bit dodgy mind you as the needle (on the dash) fluctuates somewhat, it goes up to 90 alright, but goes down a bit every so often, then back up again, etc! The good news i guess is at least it never goes past centre!!

Many thanks for any help given

Andrew

Sounds like you have the same problem as me. You have a faulty small fan, when you ac is on because the small fan isn't working. The big one run overtime to help. Just needs replacing about £130+vat I think. But there are two different ones Siemens and temic so you need to check which one you got first.

At least i'm not the only one, lol!! That price sounds right i guess, as a specialist quoted me about £190.00 to fit a new one!! Does your needle fluctuate too??

One way to test the fans is to switch the AC on then go look under the bonnet - both fans should be spinning on a slow mode  :happy2:

I had same problems, ended up replacing my small fan and now working fine. To test it run your car up to temp 90, then put heating on full power, both fans should move, if one isnt moving then Hit fan with a hammer handle and if it starts to go its your fan. I got mine from ECP

used discount code ukmk425

£82.

Fitted it myself very easy, bonnet up, remover, engine cover and air intake as well as bracket on front bumper. Tank off cover on bottom of car, then remove four bolts, holding the fans pack to the radiator. Disconect wiring, bottom right of fan pack and then wiggle/twist upwards to remove. Or if u got a ramp then it just drops down out the bottom. Un screw 3 bolts to remove the fan and replace.

Took 1hr to do in total and very easy :)

Well, if its ur fan that is buggered an easy way to find this out is tapping the centre part of the fan with a wooden stick, just a little tap. The fan may start to spin, then when u turn off engine it and restart it wont.

There is room to slide down the stick and tap away. Doing the change yourself is really easy mate. Engine cover off, 4 screws to remove the air vent (dont know name of part) thats attached to the engine cover and foward to the front of car, 8 screws to remove bottom tray, 4 screws to remove fan pack and then 3 nuts to remove fan from fan pack.

Really is simple, id say skill level 2 :)

My small fan doesnt work either but my air con doesnt work aswell, would the fan not working effect the air-con?

Yes i believe so as your small fans runs the aircon.

well my aircon still works, even though I am led to believe my small fan doesnt work, ie the basis of this thread.
