The problem VAG have now is that the GTI/vRS etc are now woefully underpowered compared to the competition.

GTi 207ps
vRS 207ps
Ed30 230ps

to be comparable or faster performance wise you either need a Golf R, Scirocco R, Cupra R or S3, but at that point you are paying ALOT more money for that extra performance.

New Focus ST 250ps.
Focus RS 300ps with a proper LSD.
Meganne RS 250ps with a proper LSD.
Astra VXR 280ps with a proper LSD.

VAG need to increase the lower VAG hot hatch outputs to around 240-250hp imo, then up the R branded models to the 300hp region.

Is there a new 2.0 planned for the VAG range?  They are surely not going to continue using the K04 TFSI in the higher output VAGs?  Maybe they will start development of the K04 TSI unit instead!!

All the reviews ive read of this new Astra VXR pretty much say its awesome.  None of the flaws of the previous car.

I replaced mine with a diesel due to doing lots of mileage  :scared: ...... then missed owning a hot hatch and bought a low mileage 2008 Megane R26.  Its stock at the moment, but I might go to RS Tuning for Stage 1, about 255-260bhp
Had: Edition 30, 3 Door Manual, Pearl Black, Cruise Control, IPod Prep, Arm Rest, Auto Lights and Wipers

the new S3 will apparently use a tuned version of the EA888 engine. power apparently only goes up by a few bhp to the 280 mark, but it has the new trick valves from the A4/A5 EA888 2.0T, and that remaps to add +95bhp at Stage 1

so, all things being equal, you could see a Stage 2 S3 knocking on the door of 400bhp

PLANS: Stage 2+

A different turbo then surely, as the EA888 maps to about 300hp at stage 2 doesnt it?  How much difference do these valves make?  Ive not even heard of these changes yet.

Also just because a remap adds =95 hp with stage 1 on the A4 it doesnt mean it would do that to the S3.

ie ed30 Golf with 230hp remaps to the same figures as an S3 with the same engine running a higher tune.  Ed30 -70Hp gain, S3 - 40hp gain.

I am buying the Golf R  but no way is the ED30 going  I will run both. I was waiting for a Ultra low miles 3 door steel grey ed30 but after around a year of looking have decided the only MK6 id consider would be the R as I really don't like the front bumper and rear pipes on the ED35 the brakes look lost with the 19" option , I have got fed up waiting for the right R to come along and after it was pointed out the last Rs are going through this August and final day for a factory order was 13TH June ,I pulled the trigger and ordered mine and through good luck sold my PX car last weekend ,just the long wait now, I was advised at order 20 weeks plus due to a lack off DSG units , This Thursday was told it had come forward to being built wc 6 Aug so It would arrive in the UK for Sept.

3 Door DSG Golf R

Steel Grey
19" Talladegas
Cruise Control
Storage pack
Colour Hi line
Dynaudio Pack
Lux pack
RNS-510 with 6 cd option
Rear Camera
Front & Rear Parking Sensors
3 Year service pack

I dont think the power should be a reflection on the quality of the car and is not the main selling point for me. I presume VW could make the next GTI pump out 300BHP if they cut costs and reduced  the quality of the interior for example.

My GF drives a Corsa - same age as my ED30 and the interior is plain awful. Her brother drives an astra of the same age - again, awful interior. Cheap and nasty feel to everything.

VW and to a degree Audi dont need headline grabbing power levels to sell their cars, the  renowned quality does that...

same turbo as far as i'm aware - but if you look at Revo's site it says +95bhp on the longitudinal EA888 2.0Ts. the only major change i'm aware of is the valves

Also just because a remap adds =95 hp with stage 1 on the A4 it doesnt mean it would do that to the S3.

agreed, hence why i said "all things being equal". we won't really have an answer until the S3 is released early next year

For me I think would have to be -

RS3
A45 AMG

I dont think the M135i looks as good as the above as an all round package but would certainly test all three

or if it is feasible the new RS4 Avant.

Diamond Black Pearl Edition 30, still going strong but now back to Stg 1

Focus RS.
The Golf is looking worse with every update, and it's getting boring IMO.

golf r then all your current mods can be transfered :happy2:

my stage 2+ ed30 is the lowest powered car i have had in 5 years but its the best car i have owned, you cant drive flat out everywere ( i try ) and the car has to be able work well in your day to day life. i was going to buy a focus rs and was given a car for 4 days and while it would be more fun at the track, the 19s paired with those seats made life hard

Personally I hope VW aren't sucked in to trying to compete on a number.  Power is only meaningful if you can put it down.  Do I want a car that I can drive and enjoy or do I want a number I can quote down the pub ?

I will be going for Golf R as next car too, but I dont think ALL your mods can  be transferred as the Exhaust is different on ED30 to Golf R (2WD and 4WD, different turbo downpipe meaning different turbo back, intake systems may fit?.

Quite fancy a stage 2+ Golf R
