Pirelli and standard GTI ride quality

Is the suspension set up the same ? Some say yes some say the Pirellis 15 mm lower like the ED30.

I want to get a pirelli but I like my comfort too :-)

I'm pretty certain that the Ed30 is not any lower at all than the Mk5 GTI ex-factory. And that the Pirelli suspension is the same as the Ed30.

AFAIK Gti is the same as Pirelli/Ed30 - they are not lower, it is a misprint in some info

i'd read somewhere they'd altered the suspension for the Ed30 but other members were quick to correct me. they carry the same part numbers apparently so should be the same

I've also remember that I read from somewhere that the ed30 is slighty lower & harder ride

I've bought the Pirelli and it does seem a harder ride.  I noticed the recommended tyre pressures are 2,6 but for the stock GTI I think it was 2,4.

The Pirelli has Eagle F1 XLs on (SHOCK not pirelli's, I know)  and the GTI have Pilot Sport 3s on.

I haven't checked the tyre pressures yet and I guess the shocks have 20,000 less miles on them so might be a bit firmer.

No change to the ride hight on an ED30 or the Pirelli compared to the standard GTI. Both the ED30 & Pirelli run 18'' alloys as standard,so that might make the ride a bit harder.

GTI suspension = ED30 suspension = Pirelli suspension

The front springs differ between DSG and manual, the rear ones between 4d and 2d.

That's it. Same ride height, same stiffness.


BYD engines are faster than AXX/BWA > higher Vmax > increased tyre pressure. From
what I know all Pirellis came from factory with P Zero MO. At least all I've seen.

Both cars are running 18" wheels.

Maybe it is the tyre pressures as not much else it can be.


I do like mine, but I wanted Xenon's and a bit more power
So when a Pirelli came up with some warranty, next service free and
16,000 less miles on it that seemed the best way to get those.
I wasn't sure about the wheels and the seats but in the flesh they look great.

Well checked the tyre pressures and they were at 2,7  I've dropped them down to 2,5 (standard GTI 2,4,  ED30 2,6)  and it's still a noticably firmer ride.  Seems to be picking out all the bumps in the round, much more than the standard GTI.  Maybe I'll swap the Eagle F1s to the PS3s maybe it's just a firmer tyre.

Filling your tyres with nitrogen will maintain consistent pressures for a considerable length of time.

Could be that there's slightly less give in the tyre wall of an Eagle F1, that it has a stiffer side wall in comparison to a PS3 - this would give a harsher ride as it would constitute unsprung mass even though it's not actually weight difference you are considering but never the less it is something going on below the suspension so therefore the suspension can not compensate for the way it affects ride quality.

The other factor would be the alloys but i'm guessing the Pirelli alloys weigh less than the Monzas, though that's not a given.

I was trying to think of clever ways I could look up the wheel weights but what I think I will do is go up to the garage take a wheel off each and lift them up. :-)

Going to swap the wheel + tyres tomorrow and see what difference that makes and also check the front spring rating.  Is there anything else I can check ?  I'll have them both up on ramps.

Is it possible something isn't set quite right on the Pirelli ?   If the parts are the same (springs, shocks, roll bars) I can't see where there is setup scope to make the ride firmer on the special editions over standard.
