R32 brakes - or are they??
« on: June 23, 2012, 08:11:42 pm »
Hi guys,

Got myself a bargain set of R32 brakes last night, but after comparing them with some of the pics on the forum they look slightly different  :surprised:

First of all, where there is a hole on top where you can see the piston, on mine there is a small "bridge" across it. There's a couple of other small differences (which you can spot for yourself below  )

Also they came with a set of 320mm audi discs (I was expecting 345mm) so wondering if someone had used them as a big brake kit on another VAG car but with the smaller disks?

Theyre basically identical to the fronts in this eBay listing:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK5-R32-Front-345-Rear-310-Brake-Calipers-Carriers-Disks-AUDI-S3-Cupra-/221050558676?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3377a3d8d4#ht_688wt_689

Been to awesome GTI who believed the calipers were off an R32 (certainly said they are big enough) although weren't 100% sure.

Have a look at the pics below and let me know what you think. . . . Ignore the surface rust (I'm going to refurb them back to new)

Thanks for looking,

Graeme

These are mine

Yours look the same or very similar. I think they may be off an S3 though as Audi had Black, R32 were blue and Leon Cupra R were red

That's for that Carl  :notworthy:

Yours is fully open in the oval shaped bit on top like the others. But I'm glad the general size and shape is the same.

At the moment I'm wondering if they are either a very early or late part revision?

They change all the time. The current S3 ones have little wings at the top and bottom.

Is their no part no. anywhere?

Mine are identical to Carl's pics.

Hopefully Dave B will be along shortly  :happy2:

Have you searched for any info on revisions to the brakes (other than the 'wings')? They deffo look like a 345mm setup, but the differences are clear.

Is it a possibility the carriers are different if running a 320mm disc?

Cheers Dom I was wondering that. The bits inside the calipers (I guess that's the carriers?) seem identical to everyone else's - although if anyone has some dimensions I could compare with?

No, can't see any, other than the number 974 on the back and a number on the carriers (but doesn't look like a part no)

Awesome GTI checked the part number on the disks and they were off an Audi A6 or 8. These calipers seem a bit big though for 321mm disks? I wondered if someone had used these calipers with the 321mm disks as like a BBK.

Just want to use them with 345mm disks

May have solved this for myself  :jumpmove:

The Darkside Jetta has EXACTLY the same brakes on it - with 345mm disks  :star:

Unless I'm missing something painfully obvious from the jetta thread, I am amazed by your searching abilities  :notworthy:

Look like MK2 TT V6 calipers to me.  Only 345mm calipers that didn't come painted.
