Bomber Command Memorial
« on: June 28, 2012, 08:25:17 am »
The Queen will officially be unveiling and dedicating The Bomber Command Memorial today. 55,573 air service personnel lost their lives from Bomber Command and after 70 years they now have something fitting for memorial, lest we forget.......
Means a lot in our family, my Grandfather was in Bomber Command and the Father and Uncle were both Pilots in the RAF.

Just wanted to give peeps a heads up, when in London please go and have a look (it really is VERY impressive). Its in the North West corner of Green Park, adjacent to Piccadilly.

Check it out at:-

And donate to the RAF BENEVOLENT FUND at:-

Cheers, Martin.  :happy2:

Also a programme on tonight on yesterday "who betrayed the bomber boys"

Its a shame its taken this long for the memorial,(one of the few things we seem to do so well in this country) and a shame robin gibb died before today as he was instrumental in the memorial finally happening.

It's not before time this memorial.  Looking forward to visiting it during my days off whilst working in London during the Olympics.

My sister's grandfather-in-law was a tail gunner in Lancasters during the war and engaged the Luftwaffe on many operations including the 1000 bomber raid on Cologne in 1942.   I took him to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby last year and fortunately for us, the Lancaster was U/S with a faulty fuel pump so was there in the hangar.  When our ex-Lancaster pilot guide told us we could go aboard, I heard the wooden rattle of his walking stick hit the hanger floor and turned round to see him disappearing up the step ladder into the Lanc! Normally he can only shuffle a few paces on his stick but he managed to clamber over the rear bulkhead unaided and into the rear turret where many old memories were evoked which saw us with a bit of moisture in the eyes.  I could sit and listen to his tales all day long.

Lest we forget.

I missed the fly past over London lancaster and some spitfires, also very happy that finally a memorial its disgusting that the government that ordered the action could then refuse to recognize the sacrifice and commitment after the war because they were embarassed,  my grandfather flew in wellingtons radio and rear gunner crashed twice and all he has to show for it is a melted lump of aluminium from one of his planes.

They just need to give campaign medals now..  :sad1:

Richn83,  could not agree more!!  :congrats:

My Grandfather died a few years ago so never saw this but I reckon he would be well chuffed. My dad Says he never talked about the War but on the rare times he did he would only say it was his duty to serve for his country and that not a day passed without his thoughts turning to the War or the friends and colleauges he lost.

JJ,  Love that story with your Sisters Grandfather in law. I imagine that would have been my Grandad if he were here today.

Couple of Phillip E West paintings (prints) that we bought for my Father to remember his dad (my Grandad)
