Hello fellow members. I've joined the forum to gain an insight into Mk5 ownership, buying tips, tuning advice any anything else that will help inform my future potential purchase of a MK5 GTI.  As I'm currently on a lease deal I won't be moving to purchase until the turn of next year - well I like to research throughly  :ashamed:

Whilst its early days I'm starting to set my sights on an Edition 30, probably one on the cusp of going out of warranty but that can give me the option of extending it. I've test drove a manual variant at Bristol VW, impressed but felt the gear change was a tad notchy therefore looking to assess a DSG equpped vehicle in time. I'm getting my head around the options available so I can firm up on a preferred specification. I'm also crossing my fingers that the MK6 GTI will attract many of the MK5 brigade thereby increasing the market place,...

The Golf has been a car I've always discounted in my previous buying history, I ruled it out as too safe simply because writers raved about its ability to address both fun and family, I kept thinking it couldn't really have an exciting edge - yes I now realise that was a flawed assumption. The fact it can do both is what actually gives it a strong attraction to me now!

My car history has comprised of the following;

 - Nissan Pulsar GTiR (everyone has to own an ugly car at some point, 40k miles in it without failure - driving Miss Daisy was how my local mechanic (Simon Norris) referred to me as the only GTiR with the original clutch and 70k miles under its drive train)
 - Honda Integra Type R (DC2 CW Variant - I still miss it, sublime handling!)
 - Subaru Impreza Bug Eye (engine note I loved, but did I mention about ugly car ownership,...)
 - Honda Civic Type R (55 plate - the best gearchange!)
 - BMW 118d MSport (07 version - well fuel was getting silly at point of purchase, oh and yeah the ugly car thing,....)

So, I'll probably lurk for the majority of the time as not owning puts me somewhat at a disadvantage. You may well see similar posts on other related MkV forums, don't think of me as a tart (my wife would laugh) but only as casting my net wide and far.

Welcome  :happy2:

On the tuning side there are loads of options.

ECU Remap: Revo - APR - GIAC - CC - Bluefin *DSG remaps are also available from a few of these companies and I understand the others are in production.

Exhaust: Milltek - APR - Blueflame

HPFP - S3 IC or Forge IC - LSD - Engine Mounts - WALK etc etc...

Check out a few threads and you will see peoples signatures looking like your future shopping list. The ED30 is good for 300+Hp easily.

VWR (Racingline) are a popular choice for people modifying there cars along with AwesomeGTI.

Hi and welcome!

When I ordered my car two years ago, I really wanted a 5 door GTI with DSG in united grey metallic. Unfortunately there were two factors that stopped that happening on the day.

1) I rocked up for my test drive, went out in the DSG car and was shocked to see that even in Sports mode with full manual shifting from the steering wheel switches, the car wouldn't hold on to the gear up near the limiter - it would still shift automatically. I had driven the TT with the DSG gear box and it didn't do that. It was most disappointing, because when I select manual mode I want full manual control and not an inopportune gear change midway through a corner. At that point I was put off from having DSG.

2) When I got back from the test drive there was a well equipped 5 Door GTI in Black Magic Pearl with every other option I wanted, but as a 6 speed manual sitting in the showroom with only a one week delivery time - rather than a 6 week on choosing my first choice colour.

So I ended up with what I have today... however...

Now that the DSG box can be reprogrammed to be fully manual in sport mode... I wish I'd bought a DSG. When I drive my mate's car (which sickeningly is a united grey with DSG) I know I should have waited 6 weeks and optioned the extra 2000 euro for DSG.

As far as manual cars go, the 6 speed is actually quite good - it frees up over time, I'm on around 26K miles now and it's pretty slick. The GTI is quite torquey so you don't have to stirr the box too much anyway in normal driving.
