Apple VPN Help

HELP!!
Im trying to set up a VPN on my macbook, I go to network - create a new VPN, enter the server address, hit connect and it prompts me -

The IPSec Shared Secret is missing?

What is a shared secret???

Do you have any hidden shares on the server? You will know this as they will probably end with the $ sign? say for example its http://10.201.86.121/homefolders/users/2012/simon$ that will make the folder a hidden share? Might be worth checking the server! is it a windows server your connecting too?

Never seen any $ signs betty, yes it is a windows server.

Im trying to VPN to my desktop at work if that helps, sorry not very technical!!

if you start with the basics.... is the server address correct? is this what your IT department have supplied you with?

is it in numbers (an IP address) or in words (like your.works-vpn-server.co.uk)?

would you be able to ask your IT department if they have the full domain name-  it will be in words..

Another thing that might assist you is we use  PPTP connections, i was using L2TP over IPsec, now when i use PPTP I enter the server address, enter my account name - in authentication settings enter my workstation password. OK - then connect and now i just get Authentication Failed

im not all too familiar with your company setup.

At mine, from home for example, on a windows machine, you would establish the VPN first to work network and then establish a remote desktop connction to your work station at work... seems like its a bit different to yours..
