Replacing engine/transmission mounts.
« on: July 01, 2012, 11:45:25 am »
Right so I have a feeling my engine/trans mounts are worn. When I start the car I get some excessive engine movement. Not had this checked out at a garage yet but most likely this will be the problem. Is there 3 engine/trans mounts in total?

Wheres the place to buy them, I'm not looking for any race mounts etc.. Just oem levels of quality or ideally better. Price wise looking to pay as little as possible within reason. It's been an expensive month :fighting:

.
Get them checked absolutely as soon as possible - You do NOT want one to break on you and potentially do some expensive damage.

The OEM engine mounts (yes there are 3) are well known for engine movement on the 2.0T FSI but not if excessive.

I have VWR engine mounts and have no idea about cheap mounts. You tend to get what you pay for, although VWR are notorious for higher prices.

....Actually I don't know exactly how they would be checked other than by warming up the engine and then one foot on the throttle while observing how the engine movement behaves.

Another way might be to remove one mount and closely inspect or test on a rig. I dunno but would expect a good VW dealer's workshop to know.

@ Black9:

Is the "excessive movement" something you see while sat in the car with the bonnet down or observe with the bonnet open? Give us more specific info please.

Thanks for reply, I've had someone start the engine for me whilst I've been looking at the engine. From what I can see it does move around a few times on the turnover and then settles fairly well. But one of the broken clips on my engine cover doesn't make it any easier to determine whether movement is excessive or not.

The main reason I think one of the mounts has worn is when I start the car, from the drivers seat I feel as if there is a bit of movement. More than I used to get and also the noise when the car starts is also a bit louder if that makes any sense lol. I will get them checked somepoint this week hopefully.

As for the mounts. I didn't mean I want cheap ones, just a well priced set of mounts that are aimed at road and not really track use. Don't mind paying a bit extra for strong/good quality mounts. As u said VWR prices can be quite pricey, especially if the car isn't going near track
