Oh no!!

Started to do an oil change on my ED30.

Easy peasy, its first oil change since I bought the car.

Nope.

The rock ape at the previous owners dealers has tightened the plastic oil filter housing up so tight that when I attempted to undo it, it cracked the  36mm hex portion of the housing off. Apart from the pain of £42 for a new housing, whats the best way of getting the old one off. I've tried an oil filter strap, and I cant loosen it even with a 1/2 drive socket set. I've a couple of bust ribs, so I cant give it max attack, but even so...


Is the threaded part of the adapter it screws into ally or plastic. If its ally, I might try to heat the plastic up, but I forsee a world of hassle looming.....

Are you turning it the correct way ? Known loads of people to turn things the wrong way and brake stuff like that

No, its deffo the correct way, but thanks for asking..

The one on my previous GTi was almost as tight, but did come off eventually. They are only meant to be done up lightly.

I have had this when removing the filter when engine is cold, seal off the broken bit and run the engine up to temp at idle and the residual heat may help a bit.

Luckily the housing is intact, its just the plastic hexagonal part of the 'can' that's broken in half so the socket won't work. I will try heating it with a heat gun. Don't want to refill the engine with dirty oil - I've drained it all off.

Concerned that the threaded part of the housing screws onto more plastic rather than metal though. Just in case I have to get a little violent and saw it off. :)

So which way are you trying to turn it, clockwise or anti clockwise?  From under the car? Then at least you know, we know your doing it correct

Hammer a screwdriver through the housing and use it as a lever. Drill through it if necessary to get the screwdriver or bar or whatever through.

A mate of mine did this, although it wasn't a Golf.

Puncturing it wont work, its a plastic filter housing.

I'm not going to drill it, but I will have a new one to fit, so no real issue there anyway.

Can't believe the wretched thing is on so tight though!

Urghh I did this on my first oil change  I can't remember how I got it off in the end but it was a real headache and I think it involved a hacksaw. A proper oil filter housing socket is essential.

where did you get a housing for £42 ? i went to a local seat dealer to price one in case i damage mine next filter change and was quoted £100!!!!

Same price quoted by 2 dealers. Part no:06D 115 408B.

£42 is a total rip though..

It wasn't for me, but I had to assemble it. All good quality plastic, proper instructions, well put together, worked perfectly, came in a huge box.

So how come £42 for a crappy oil filter housing..?

VW, you are having a laugh at my expense. I bet it cost you a couple of quid tops.

Quality bit of kit that   The only issue I have had is the yellow disc in the front wheel working loose at high speeds as it just presses on
