Correct tyre size on rears?!
« on: July 03, 2012, 10:58:48 pm »
Hey all when i picked up my golf a few years back the Monza 2 alloys had a different profile tyre on the back to what it had on the front..Rears 245/40/18 & fronts 225/40/18. Is this normal? I did run 225 on the back for a few days while waiting for a some new rubber but this played havoc with the ESP! Its only come to light as the local tyre fitter said the rears are too big??

They are. I had that in the front when I got mine. ESP should settle down

On the ex-factory GTI, tyres are the same size all around: 225/40R/18/YXL

225/40 yes. Wider in the back will reduce handling rather than improving it.

Wish I knew why. I've read a few articles where tuners modded mkv's and put wider tires in the rear then what was up front. and they found the handling was worse with the set-up. I cannot recall why that was but they went back to matching the rear size with that of the fronts and found that cornering improved. I'll search my mags, maybe I'll find one of the articles and get back as to why this is...

I've heard that putting wider tyres on the front of a FWD car helps. However, it may increase the chances of aquaplaning.

The RS3 has wider fronts but that's 'quattro' - Or is it just Haldex?

If you put wider tyres on the rear you will be biasing the car towards understeer...... This is not good!!
