BKD 2.0 TDI clutch spec?
« on: July 06, 2012, 06:29:14 am »
Hey all,

Anyone know what the OEM MK5 2.0 TDI clutch is rated to? or model number so I can find it?

Thinking about installing a hybrid turbo, which is rated at 260bhp/450nm, but aiming for around 200bhp/400nm with a remap, either way I'm guessing I'll need a higher rated clutch!

Also interested in knowing what's available out there for uprating the BKD clutch. I have a Shark Remap to 182 bhp, last time I checked, but if my turbo ever went I would go hybrid to replace it.

JP, if you are aiming for 400 Nm you may struggle to get something that low with a turbo capable of 260 bhp.
My OEM garrett turbo (with remap) has been dishing out ~410Nm for the last 11,000 miles.  :driver:
Interesting enough also, my standard clutch hasn't missed a beat or shown any signs of slipping, ever.  :happy2:

Ha ha, Monday to Friday I mainly use the car for commuting to work so a normal sedate stop/start drive on A and B roads, nothing to adventurous. I'm out and about a few nights in the week and with two mates having Peugeot 306 GTI-6's I need to keep up with them.

Weekends are more motorway driving to see the GF but I do give it the beans now and then.

I also have a Milltek big bore downpipe, and full non-resonated exhaust. No EGR Delete yet tho.

Who did you get the car remapped with? Rolling roaded at all? I had mine RR'd before the Milltek so it'd be interesting to get it dome again and see what benefit it is/isn't.

That would be interesting! ...I had my map done down Regal Autosport in Southampton, but that was from OEM with pipes already fitted and no RR so I cant shed any light on whether or not it makes any difference!

FYI Hybrid I'm getting - but as I said mapped to 200ish and whatever torque it gives! :) Think I'll see how the clutch handles it, and upgrade if necessary.

I'm not sure myself what the clutch rating is, however i'd suggest you speak to Darkside Developments who specialise in VAG TDI tuning - theyre own Jetta has over 300bhp and silly torque

Stage 2 fitted to my PD140, the clutch was ok for a bit at just over 200-210 on AMD's rollers. Started to struggle when joining the motorways with the foot on the pedal getting me upto 70 mph. This wasn't really a problem for normal town driving though. Would get slip from 3000rpm.

Swapped to the Darkside Southbend Stage 2 Daily a couple of weeks back, now no problem at all. Meant to be silent, but there is a rattle which I'm thinking is some slack between the plate and the bearing.

That is some insane van they got there! 230bhp with 470nm!

Thanks for the replies, good to hear it can be done on the OEM, to start at least.

Fish - How bad is the rattle? Livable? Did it take long to fit?

Cheers

Pedal is a little heavier and if I was sitting in traffic day after day I would think twice, but then again I wouldm't have an uprated turbo on that either. Otherwise nothing to worry about.

The rattle can happen when on idle, but just blipping the throttle and it goes away. The other time it rattles is between 2500-3500 when applying the loud pedal joining the motorway. (read: as in giving it some to get upto speed) Otherwise it's silent.

I'll let those with more diesel tuning knowledge to update on that bit. If I were it would be to the S3 unit as it's a cheap and stright forward install.

I'm not sure if you're also getting into the area of needing upgraded injectors at that point. I've been told the PD140 is ok for a stage 2 turbo, but I'd be re-checking that beforehand.
