GNJ's MK5 GTI Progress Thread
« on: July 07, 2012, 12:56:53 pm »
Right I thought I would do a proper progress thread for this car so here goes.

I bought the car 2 weeks ago. It came with:

18" Monzas,
ED30 splitter
carbon fibre wrapped grill surround
ED30 side skirts
R32 rear with side exit valance
Eibach Sportline lowering springs

The car is just short of 73k miles but recently had the cambelt, water pump etc done at JBS in Chesterfield so I was happy with the mileage if a little more than I had hoped for. I was willing to ignore this fact as I own a VAG specialist company and we will be moving into a new workshop in October so maintaining a high miler isn't an issue.

The car has 1 or 2 rough bits that need sorting. On the interior it needs new grab handles, electric window switches and steering wheel MF blank covers as someone has been in it with a hand full of rings by the looks of it. It is otherwise immaculate inside. These have been ordered up and should be on by next weekend

On the outside, it is in good condition. It could do with a machine polish to get rid of swirls which I will do this month sometime when we get some more prolonged decent weather (IF!)

The Monzas have quite a few kerb marks but they will be replaced by BBS VZ033 18's as soon as BBS pull their finger out and get the new run finished! So hopefully by the end of August the interior will be sorted, the paint will be swirl free and it will have new wheels.

Anyway, pics the day after I picked it up. Apologies for the poor quality and the recycling tub in the pic!

More pics to be added tomorrow after it has been cleaned.

Plans:

Fit my private plate as soon as V5 comes
Machine polish & fit new interior bits as above
BBS VZ 033 18 x 8" with 225/40/18 Uniroyal Rainsport or Falken FK452 rubber
Shark Performance stage 1 remap
De wiper rear
Coilovers, probably KW V1

Then once we move into the unit in October:

WALK
Full Polybush, er, Polybush kit
Whiteline ARB's
Under seal
GNJ Motorsport air intake (In development, watch this space)
Milltek downpipe
TTS engine cover
JS Performance silicone hose kit which we will be helping to develop
K Sport 356mm 8 pots

I am yet to decide how far to push this car power wise. It is very tempting to stick a K04 on it and go to stage 3 but as the S3 was sold to save money for expanding the business and buying a house, chucking £5k+ at a £7k car seems a bit daft when the GTI is a great car out of the box and a brilliant car with a few tweaks. So expect it to have a LOBA big turbo on by the the spring

:happy2: nice mate, just remember if you go for the loba, it will mean rods will most deffo need replacing. Oh and if i were you i'd forget the 452's. God damn awfull. I have just ditched them with 5mm of tread left on them, probably the worse tyre i have had.

Not a performance tyre but a great commuting / daily drive tyre as they last forever lol

Thanks  :happy2:

It amazes me the difference in opinion on tyres! I had FK452's on both my Astra VXR and S3 and I thought they were great all round

The LOBA comment was a joke really, no way I would spend that much on a £7k car. My plan is to build the business up and run this at stage 1 for 2 years and then get a new demo. Maybe a TTS or another S3.

Well we sell a fair few of the K Sport kits to the Vauxhall lads and they rate them highly. They are absolutely massive! I have some Astra kits in stock and they look great. I know some of the time attack cars run them.

As said, they are fantastic value for money and there are some good pad options for them.

I am hoping they go on easily and run fine as they could be a big seller for us in the VAG scene.

Was discussing them recently with a friend.  A kit for a grand whereas replacement rotors on some of the VAG popular BBKs are a grand lol.
If they become popular no doubt they'll take a hike in price with added popularity/VAG tax

Well the RRP was put up by £100 in Feb. So I'm hoping they will stay the same for a while yet.

VAG tax
