Cylinder deactivation has got to be the future. I'd love to know how that engine would remap too.

Well if you read the review of this, and indeed those of the Audi's that use it, and of course the new V8 Continental, it's barely noticeable. Cylinders are only deactivated when cruising between 1400rpm and 4000rpm, so not when you're pushing on.

I've read comments suggesting 75+ mpg is possible with this car, which is crazy.

....I wonder if there's any lag/delay if you want to accelerate quite hard from within that rev range.

No problem, I think the need to balance performance and economy is more important now than ever before. It's heartening to see designers solving these modern day problems without resorting to alternative fuel sources, although I accept that one day it's inevitable they will be forced to.

Imagine a Golf GTI that provides all the performance you have come to expect, but that can do 60 - 70mpg on a motorway cruise... I'd buy into that!

I much prefer the idea of such technology over battery hybrids etc. Particularly as I nearly got hit recently by a fecking Toyota Pious because I stepped back without hearing it. It was only in a car park but! I then calmly told the owner that the car he had bought was an imposter and explained the dust-to-dust carbon footprint of the real world. He didn't have an answer but seemed interested in what I was saying but just made excuses about buying it for its mpg (which isn't so fantastic anyway) [/rant]
