Oil question
« on: July 07, 2012, 08:44:52 pm »
Having had a BMW previously I am used to the oil light coming on every 1000 miles or so and having put a litre or so in. Had the golf gti for circa 6 months and no oil light has come on. Is it meant to and do they burn allot of oil? Checked the level and looks ok so just wanted to check. Car had full service before I bought it.

Some burn oil, some don't.

I've read on here it is due to how they were run in  :surprised:

Anyway, the dipstick has a min and a max on it to enable you to check it, don't rely on the oil light to tell you. There was a thread on here the other day about the oil light only coming on for someone when the sump was practically bone dry  :scared:

My advice (and I'm sure 90% of the forum agree) is check it monthly at least by the dipstick  :happy2:

You should never wait for a oil light to top up oil....should really be checked regularly  :drinking:

There was a thread on here the other day about the oil light only coming on for someone when the sump was practically bone dry  :scared:

The OP of that thread overreacted somewhat imo, he had the yellow 'low oil level' warning come on then had a 'mechanic' check and top up the oil on a hot engine with 2.5l when the required amount on activation of the yellow warning is only 1litre to refill to capacity...

Checking monthly as you say and not relying on the warning is the way to go  :happy2:

Had my ED30 6 months now and try to remember to check every month. It is something I am conscious about with a turbo'd engine. IMO don't just top it up, change it at least every 6 months, got a good deal on at National Tyres using (5 litres) Castrol Edge 5W30 For £40 ish about 2 weeks ago. For peace of mind it's worth it alone.

I check it when cold as that's what I've been taught but saying that many peeps do run the car, turn off engine, wait 15 mins then check the oil level (thinking its a more accurate reading when it's been hot and then settled)
