Edition 30 values
« on: July 09, 2012, 04:54:28 pm »
I bought an Ed30 a few months ago in the belief they would be more immune from depreciation.

Just looking on Autotrader, it seems as though the prices are tumbling. Am I correct, or have I just picked a bad week to compare?

Whats peoples views and recent experiences please.

Best thing to do is stop looking at Autotrader and enjoy the car :happy2:

The Edition 30 should be a bit better protected from depreciation but (virtually) no car is immune from it.

Still pretty good. I'm still sure I can get just about 10k for mine or 8k trade in,if I decided to sell. Late 56 DSG for 60k, with a long extras list.

if an enthusiast wants it, they will be prepared to cough up for it. If they don't , let them walk away, after all you hold the keys....they don't.

I just had a look on autotrader. The high mileage ones are going from 9-10K. The lower mileage ones with a good level of spec are for sale at 11 - 12k. Seems about right to me.

Ive had my Edition 30 since November 2007 when the car was 6 months old. The depreciation is very slow now compared to the first couple of years of ownership  :scared:

As Billy has just said, dont worry about depreciation and enjoy the car. Never worry about things you cant change  :happy2:

I can't change the depreciation, but I don't have to suffer it!  :)

Sorry to burst the Ed 30 bubble but it is just a family hatch ( albeit a good one ) why would it not depreciate like all other hatchback cars and indeed 99% of all cars. Also  it's the best GTI, but only to those people in the bubble, most people looking to buy a sporty Golf, wont understand or care that it has a very tuneable turbo.
If you are looking to buy a family type hatchback of this age and not lose money you are either cuckoo or a car dealer.

Why are you looking at the prices? Are you selling already? If not, why look?

You seem to suggest in your OP that the only reason you bought the Edition 30 is due to your believe that it is less susceptible to depreciation than other cars. I could be wrong but I like most peeps on here bought my car based on what it was, not what it would cost to run, insure or resale value in the future.

I Bought my ED30 5 months ago for just under 12k, no idea what it's worth now and (without being flippant) am not too concerned. I bought the "exact" car I wanted, in the colour I wanted, with the spec' I wanted (nearly) with the full knowledge that one day when I trade it in, it will be worth less, a lot less.

If your buying a slightly more specialised car such as an ED30/Pirelli or R32 there will surely only be a finite amount of people (enthusiasts) who will be in the market for them, or even know what they are. As the mk6 GTI and mk6 R become more affordable to us poorer Golf lovers I'm sure prices will go down quicker on the mk5.

I try and buy my cars based on what are hoot to own and depreciation. There needs to best me sort of balance. I'm not a car dealer, but I love my cars and really try not to buy a 'fashion item' car that loses a lot of money. I have owned lots of gti's over the years, modded them, rallied them, loved them. I will never forget the look of the salesman from the VW garage delivering the paperwork for my brand new, unregistered gti back in the late 1980's as I had the plastic wheel arch trims off whilst I modded the wings to suit the big wheels I was fitting.

So, I am just interested in not losing loads of money on a car, that's all. I think you will all be cheesed off if it costs you several thousands more to swap than you originally budgeted for when the time comes..."

I watch the values closely as my mate is after one (after driving mine) and has been looking for a high spec one since January, not found one he likes yet.

Personally, I have said it before that ED30 values dropped the best part of £1500 between January 2011 and October 2011 (during the time I was looking for one for myself) and I think they have gone down another £1000 since then, In October £12.5 to 13k seemed the going rate, now its more like 10k, worrying for those who change cars frequently, not so much an issue for those that love the car and will keep it for years  :happy2:

It WILL hold its value better than a STD GTI (supply and demand) but will still depreciate especially in a recession.

I think there will be lots of ED30's for sale when the Golf R hits over 3yrs old and prices drop to 15-16K  :signLOL:, that's the earliest mine will be going anway ( I am well known for keeping cars 4-5 years anyhoo)
