Cam timing problem?
« on: July 09, 2012, 08:14:03 pm »
At the minute my car is driving me and every person I take it to mad because we can't find out why it's down in power. The next possibility is cam timing.

Has anyone had an issue with this before? If so what are the symptoms? It's being checked tomorrow but I'd like to know. My car just can't make any power, either in standard form or mapped form!

Thanks, Stu.

Did it just happen to stop making power or had something been done to start it? Any reoccurring fault codes? Think some of the boffins will want to see some data logging of your boost pressure etc is that possible to get?

I will have a data log to put up tomorrow hopefully

The car isn't throwing up any fault codes, what I do know is that the performance has never been right and it has never really changed since I got it, I really do think this is the only thing left to check! Lol, hopefully something comes of it

Yes I've had a few in with the cam timing out!
assuming you've checked all other possibilities first!
Symptoms are lack of bottom end power (torque) engine will rev out but very lethargic at best
It's easy to check the valve timing just one tooth out will make a big difference as the motor cannot hold its boost (no codes either)
Hope this helps  :happy2:

Steve is 100% right, we often see the same.

Has it been dyno tested and data logged to get an idea of whats happening?

Thanks again!

Turns out this is exactly what was wrong!! The timing belt had been put on two teeth out from normal. I'm so glad the problem has been found, im about to put a more detailed answer on my build thread.

Thanks for the help  :happy2:

It was a vw specialist somewhere in Norfolk, it was done at 60000 miles and I bought the car at 64000. I wish I had drove another one before it, I thought it felt not too bad even though that's been wrong the whole time I've owned it.

Would love to have taken it to falkland 8 months ago, wold have saved a lot of money  :surprised:
