RNS510 GPS Location - behind dials? Tutorial please
« on: July 09, 2012, 08:23:13 pm »
Hi

My GPS is currently under the metal grill, and (depending on weather) it's a bit hit and miss - so I would like to locate it better.

Search revealed that behind the dials is a popular choice, however I can't find a guide of how to do it. I installed the unit myself, so that's not a problem - it's just the bit about getting behind the dials. Ideally, I would like one with photos so I would need to work hard to mess it up!

Can anyone help me, please, or point me in the direction of where I might find some guidance?

Thanks

M

I've places mine on top of the unit towards the back. Behind the hazard light switch. Stays stuck there as its magnetic. Beer moves and never had issues in the 8 months that it's been fitted.

Worth a try. Saves removing the dials.

I have my antenna stuck to a metal bracket behind the glovebox, always got high signal.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Thanks for all the suggestions - I have just moved the GPS sensor behind the dials.  :happy2:

Quite simple in the end, and I am now getting really strong pick-up of satellites. I haven't got any photos but:

Remove RNS in usual way to get access to the back of it, and the GPS.
Lower steering wheel to bottom, and pull out as near to the driver as poss.
There is a piece of plastic at the bottom of the instrument panel which attaches to the leatherette cover between the panel and the steering column. There is a spring clip on each side, so all you need to do is grab hold at each and and gently pull towards you/slightly up. It comes off quite easily.
There are two T20 screws under the dials - remove those, and gently pull the dials towards you. There is a multi-plug on the back, so no cables to worry about.
You can now pass the GPS through behind where the dials go - there is a metal bar at the top which the magnetic GPS will stick to - leaving a pretty thin layer of dash between the top of the GPS and the sky!
I secured the cable with some masking tape, and put back together.

Works well!  :driver:
