Volkswagen Golf MkV GTI Edition 30 : FAQ
« on: May 27, 2009, 08:28:10 pm »
Volkswagen Golf MkV GTI Edition 30

This guide is intended to provide some of the data accumulated here and on other forums, enjoy  :happy2:

>> General Mk5 platform wiki guide <<
>> Edition 30 original dealer brochure <<
>> GTI vs Edition 30 differences discussion thread! <<
>> Edition 30 press pack  <<

Volkswagen marked the GTI's 30th anniversary by producing the GTI Edition 30.
On sale in November 2006 from £22,295 RRP,with a (supposedly) limited production run of only 1500 (Europe models)
(but VW went on to produce an estimated 2400 ??)

The Edition 30 was available in 6 colours;
Tornado Red, Black, Candy White, Reflex Silver (Metallic), Steel Grey (Metallic) and Diamond Black (Pearl).

Check out the your favourite colours in >> The Colours Section <<

Standard specification

- BYD 169 kW (230 PS) Engine (very close relative of 8P S3 engine), with K04 turbocharger and remote front mounted dump valve

-  dependent on the destined market  the Edition 30 was available with
UK market = 18" BBS originated 'Pescara' alloy wheels

other         =  matt black versions of the 18" 'Monza II' alloy wheels.

225/40/18 tyres of various makes fitted as OE

- Half Leather seats (Interlagos/leather) which are heated and have electric lumbar support
- All the lower skirts / bumpers around the ED30 are colour coded
- Smoked Rear Light Lens (common to R32)
- Lots of ED30 badges around the car and red stitching on the seats, mats, handbrake and steering wheel

Limited Edition plaques
The cars although supposedly limited did not come with any numbering or plaque from the factory.
After a concerted campaign by 'hotrod' >> Limited ED30 plaques on golfgtiforum <<, VW relented and agreed to produce them to be retrofitted to cars.
Plaques are sent direct to owners and you fit it yourself.

stealthwolfs tips on getting a plaque
1. Make sure the car is a UK-spec one and not an import (UK only get a plaque)
2. Ring your dealer and ask them to make sure your details are on the VW database.
3. Ring VW UK and ask about the plaque.
4. Wait. Maybe forever...

if you want a spare one then check out the >> extra plaque group buy <<.

also check out getting your number on the dash trim .... here

garethmk1 has created a build list info database for the cars >> garethmk1's ED30 info database <<
please register your car with him so we can build a full record of them.  :happy2:

Engine specification

The ED30 engine is a detuned version of the Audi S3 powerplant , the standard output is
Engine power   169kW /  230 PS / 227 bhp @ 5500 rpm
Engine torque   300 NM / 221 lbs/ft

for best performance/economy it should be run on min 98RON fuel in std form (but can be run on 95 RON)
There is some info that some of the FSI (Fuel stratified Injection) functionality was removed from all but the first GTI's.

Check out the engine specifications >> 2.0_TFSI on wiki <<
and >> full tech doc pdf <<

for comparison rototest have rolling road graphs for review
(these are direct driven with wheels removed so equate to an @ the wheels power/torque figure)

>> std GTI 2.0 TFSI MY05 <<
>> std GTI 2.0 TFSI MY06 <<
>> std GTI Edition 30 2.0 TFSI MY07 <<
>> std  R32 MY06 <<

The ED30 runs lower compression than the std K03 GTI about 0.5 points, therefore you can run more timing advance which equates to about 15hp more up top..

compared to the std GTI
(data from   >> my-gti.com << )
GTI - 200ps/197bhp/147kw/280nm
Edition 30 - 230ps/226bhp/169kw/300nm
Pirelli - 230ps/226bhp/169kw/300nm
Seat Leon Cupra R - 240ps/237bhp/177kw/300nm
Audi S3 - 265ps/261bhp/195kw/350nm  (188kw Australia - temperature issue)

Differences between the Volkswagen Golf GTI Engine and the Volkswagen Golf Edition 30 and Pirelli Engine.

Larger Turbo from S3 (K04) rather then the K03 on the GTI
87°C thermostat instead of 80°C
Larger capacity fuel injectors (13% higher flow)
Larger intercooler (smaller then the S3)             (* danishmkvgti - states that std GTI and ED30 IC are the same size)
Engine block main bearing caps, pedestals are reinforced
Conrods have larger rod bolts and new bearings
Pistons have 21mm gudgeon pins instead of 19mm
Piston top ring is improved
Recirculation Valve (blow off valve) not located on turbo
The Audi S3 and the Edition 30/Pirelli/Seat Leon Cupra R share the same short block, same turbo and similar intercooler.

Audi S3 (195 KW - 188KW Australia) is a BHZ code
Edition 30 (169KW) is a BYD code
Seat Leon Cupra R is a BWJ code

S3 Turbo 06F 145 702  C KKK (06F145702 C KKK)
Edition 30 Turbo 06F 145 702  C KKK (06F145702 C KKK)

S3  Short Block BHZ 06F 100 035 (06F100035)
Edition 30 Short Block BYD 06F 100 035 (06F100035)

S3 Intercooler 1K0 145 803 P (1K0145803P)
Edition 30  Intercooler 1K0 145 803 A (1K0145803A)

Edition 30 Intercooler is slightly smaller than the S3 intercooler

Golf GTi Pirelli Edition

another special edition that came after the Edition 30.
Mechanically this car is identical to the Edition 30 and therefore all issues/tweaks/tips and enhancements can be applied the same. *

[* : edit added Dec 09 : there are reports of misfire issues in later remapped K04 cars, this seems to be linked to valve springs and how restrictive your exhaust is!

Fantastic mate!

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

notes
the 195/200/210 kW versions have stronger pistons & gudgeon pins, new rings, reinforced connecting rods, new bearings, reinforced cylinder block at the main bearing pedestals and cap, new lightweight aluminium-silicon alloy cylinder head for high temperature resistance and strength, adjusted exhaust camshaft timing, increased cross-section high-pressure injectors, 1.2 bar boost pressure turbocharger with larger turbine and compression rotor.

Doesn't that mean that E30 engine is NOT S3?

There do seem to be distinct differences between ED30 and S3 engine.
This is discussed at length with everyone having an opinion.
From what I can ascertain

ED30 vs S3 (8P)
camshaft is different
reinforced block on S3
injectors/turbo are the same

In summary its NOT identical to the S3 engine but it IS very close to it in many respects (imho based on the info at my disposal)
All things being equal ultimately the S3 may have a slightly higher 'headroom' to be tuned but the Ed30 unit (if different) is proving just as tough.

This thread is designed to give an indication of the differences (and similarities) and indicate any weakpoints when tuning  :happy2:

Help!

Apologies if someone has already discussed this topic but I'm new to this site.  I own a Edition 30 GTi on an 07 plate which requires 2 allow wheels refurbishing.

My VW Bodyshop in Cambridge tell me that they can't match the wheels to to the existing ones so I will have to have all 4 painted.

This is utter madness - is there anyone out there who knows what the paint code is?!!!

Thanks in anticipation

Lisa

Welcome Lucy. It is true VW cant match there own paint work on your alloys the pescari's
It is indeed very difficult for anyone to get the correct shade for some reason with them. Depending on how bad the damage is it might be worth ringing up a independent, who should beable to match the paint and repair for about £50 a wheel ( if it's just a couple of scuffs).

Failing that it would probably be cheaper to get all four wheels repainted at a specialist than getting VW to paint just two wheels.

Where are you based, we could probably find you decent refurbers nearby.  :happy2:

Sorry for the confusion, lucy 6725 is Lisa!!

Thanks for the replies.  Have now got very stroppy with VW and they are going to send the two wheels away to someone who can match the paint at their expense.  One of the wheels is pretty badly scuffed (I blame my husband, not me, naturally!) but the other just has a tiny stone chip out of it.... Just can't believe that a VW approved bodyshop can't sort it!

It would be useful to know if anyone has come across the paint code for the wheels, it would seem it's a big VW secret!

Lisa

i recently had all 4 of my pescara's refurbed and asked for them to be close as poss to the orginial colour ended up like this:

not 100% happy with outcome but will only be putting them back on when I sell the car
