Tyre size on 19x8j. 88Y or 91Y? 225 or 235?
« on: July 11, 2012, 02:07:32 pm »
So I think I've decided to keep my 19s.

Looking at tyres though, what size / rating do people run?

Currently they have part worn / budget tyres but this will change..
The back has 235/35/19 falkens on there at the moment look quite ballooned!(These are coming off anyway and going on the van)
The fronts have 235/35/19 toyo proxey4s (are these even meant for cars?) and these dont look ballooned despite being the same size. Infact they look to sit on the wheel just right.

The correct size to keep the same (or near as possible) rolling radius is actually 225/35/19

Quote
Tyre Size   Diameter  Circumference  Difference  Speedo  Fits Wheel Rim
----------    -----------  ---------------   ------------   --------  --------------
225/40 R18  638 mm    2004 mm         0.00 %     70.00   7.5x18 to 9x18
225/35 R19  640 mm    2011 mm         0.35 %     70.24   7.5x19 to 9x19
235/35 R19  648 mm    2036 mm         1.60 %     71.12   8x19 to 9.5x19

To keep things simple I've narrowed my choice to either Goodyear F1 ASY2 or Michelin PSS

The 225 size though are only rated at 88Y. Is this ok? Will 225 look too stretched?

The 235 are 91Y but the michelin is £40 more for this size per tyre. The Goodyear is only £10 more per tyre in 235. Do these brands look ballooned in these sizes?

The 235 falken balloons

The 235 toyo which look about right to me

Thanks in advance  :drinking:

225 on an 8J rim won't look stretched at all. think about it, 225mm is about 9 inches! i run 225 on an 8J (albeit an 18" rim)

if i were you i'd stick with 225/35R19 but i would pay attention to the load rating and not go below manufacturer spec if you can avoid it

And what is the load rating for the gti? is 88Y below the rating?

damn so 88y isnt ideal.

I cant see that michelin or goodyear do 225/35/19 in a 91y

you can use either, the 225 will give a bit more clearance when lowering, I ran 235 on my lowered Ed30 with no issues, I now run 225 on the S3 but its bit lower :happy2:

it was the weight rating I was more concerned about. If you NEED to have 91Y then obviously I'd go for the 235 but if 88Y is ok then I'll go for the 225 i think.

just bin in the garage and checked, the 225/35 PS2's on the S3 are 88Y and have been on the car for 18 months with no issues

Be carefull gaz, an insurance company will use that to screw you over no doubt about it, there deffo the wrong load rating for your car..... i think. I will for sure only ever use 92y xl after some of the stories ive herd.  :scared:

Wouldnt use any track tyres either like r888's and a048's.

Michelin need to sort their head out and release the super sport at least then ill have a tyre which is capable on road and track and keep the insurance companies happy.

Edit - just checked maybe the load rating is different for 19" tyres as they dont do 92y xl but they do 93y xl
