AC Problems
« on: July 18, 2012, 07:58:09 pm »
Car had it's 4 year service 2 months ago... 2000 miles later my Air con seems to have packed in.  I know it's likely the compressor as I've checked all the fuses and tried a re-gas.  Question is could it be anything else and is there anything I can do to fault find further ?

Sadly don't have VAGCOM etc so can't get error codes.  Low side pressure was low before i started to re-gas but it's now at a healthy PSI level/  Neither of the radiator fans spin up when I activate the AC.  Done a quick search and someone mentioned a switch, could it be that simple ?

I'll take it back to VW if there's no way to be sure... I'm sure they'll charge me through the teeth for it mind lol

I had the high pressure switch replaced by VW under used car warranty, would have been about £100 parts and labour. Similar symptoms to compressor failiure i.e. fan not spinning with ac on.

Thanks Gazza,  I've got an AC specialist coming round tomorrow to take a look see if he can diagnose the problem.  I'll point him towards the sensor and ask him if he's any way of testing it..  After mentioning the compressor he also noted it could be the condenser lol.  Either one of sounds like it's gonna cost me more than a sensor  :sad1:

I took the car to VW and they were pretty quick to diagnose the high pressure switch was the fault. I did have to take it back later that week as they needed to order the switch.

I've had an indi AC chap out and between us we found a leaky pressure switch  :happy2:.  Thanks Gazza we'd likely not have noticed it had you not mentioned it here :-).

If anyone has a part number I'd appreciate it.  Also if anyone has any idea how the bloody thing comes off cause it seems to be stuck  :sad1:

PN is... 1K0 959 126 D

You need a crow foot spanner to get it off.

You get to it easier from the top... you just need the right type of spanner.

I need to get the electrical connector out first that's a little jammed at the moment.  Got the part now though, just need to find myself a spanner and a bit of wiggle in the connector :-)
