not the same as no turbo or dsg but when i bought my MK3 8v it had 105,000 on it! I ran it to 173k and it is still going i believe

In a word yes. 

Just make sure it's been well looked after and a proper history as others have said and it'll be fine.  In the UK mileage is SUCH a hang up I don't know why.   Condition and service history are FAR more important but each to their own. 

Id rather have a high mileage cared for car.  Then a low mileage "minter" with patchy history in poor nick.
