Any and every tyre will only last according to how they are driven. 20k miles difference doesn't sound realistic to me unless a comparison is being made with a low performance average 1.6 litre standard family car.

Why are you asking such questions (I also read your other thread about tyres) if you have a GTI which is a relatively high performance car?

Low profile tyres are OEM for a reason and not just for fashion or show.

Well a TDI ain't no slouch. Perhaps you would feel more comfortable if you swop for what the TDI was originally supplied with?

You could sell 18" GTI Monza alloys quite easily. Or someone on here might even do a straight swop.

17's are good on a Mk5 Golf.

What sort of miles do you drive in an average year?

Ah, so you want GTI alloys, but you don't want to put GTI tyres on it. Clever. That's like buying a TDI and putting petrol in it. It'll work, for a little while, but it's gonna look and sound sh*t, and will wreck pretty much everything around it quick enough.

You will be lucky to get 20,000 miles out of a pair on the front of a diesel TDI or a petrol GTI never mind less than.... Think you may have bought the wrong car m8 ... as suggested maybe you should get some original size wheels for the car to keep the cost of replacement tyres down... If you are thinking of going to 17" I have a set for sale maybe you could sell your 18"...

If it helps to know, not only is it a safer option, but by only buying one pair of new tyres for the rear and moving the rears to the front each time, it will save you money outlay. The fronts wear quicker on FWD.
