Machine Polisher?? Amazon £54.97 - any recommendations?
« on: July 17, 2012, 03:17:47 pm »
Hi all,

Bit of a novice here - time has come to start paying a bit more attention to the car, starting with a good polish!

i want to buy a machine posilish but i have no idea what's the best on the market for this kind of price range - £50-70

What are everyone's thoughts on the below machine? amazon was in fairness the first place i looked....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/SILVERLINE-SILVERSTORM%C2%AE-129659-POLISHER-PLATINUM/dp/B005KUGMK2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342533071&sr=8-1

i'm gonna have a good read through this detailing section but are there any products out there which everyone uses??

Also a couple of tiny scratches on the car, want to try polish them out, again what would be best for this?

Looks like a standard rotary polishing machine....

TBH it doesnt look too bad and a great price.

Most important thing is whats its lowest speed. Needs to be 600-900rpm for spreading and then up to 1500-1800rpm for polishing. As long as its got good speed variation then it should be suitable for working on the car.

BUT!!!!!!!

Please dont go anywhere near your car with this until you know what your doing. Get a scrap bonnet from the scrappy and have a play on that first... otherwise your next thread title will be

"help i've completely buggered up my paint with a £50 tool I got on amazon"

Heavy and not very smooth. Make a good angle grinder!

Your better off starting with a DA!  :happy2:

I have one of these somewhere actually.

Used it for months- perfectly up to the job. Infact, it's outlasted my Meguiars Dual Action Polisher and my CYC Rotary

Get it mate. But make sure you buy a 3m backing plate and some nice pads  :happy2:

Take a look there. The silver line is actually cheaper...

You NEED one of these too. Do NOT scrimp here. It will ruin your polishing life..

thanks all, very much just looking to get an idea of whats right and wrong at the moment.

I plan to read up on everything before i even get close to the car.

Greeners, whats a "DA" ? What polisher do you use?

Keano, thanks - will research the best pads. Great, so does the backing plate sit between the machine and the pad?

so much to learn.....

The standard (blue) Silverline polisher has more usable speed for burnishing 600-3000rpm, and as a bonus there cheaper than a Siverstorm, For the weekend user there are perfect although if you not confident a Dual action (DA) polisher is better.

The easiest way to understand the difference between a rotary and a dual action is simple.

A rotors rotates in a perfect circle which means the panel your polishing will warm up the paint quite fast, and if you don't know what your doing will damage the paint.

Dual action is a machine whichs motions are not perfect circles which means it takes longer for the panels to warm up and as a beginner in my opinion is the best way to startI
