Cambelt/water pump

Are there any tell tale signs that the cambelt and water pump need changing? Ie engine management light, difference in performance etc and what can happen to the engine if these things go wrong before you have changed them? Cheers

If the cambelt snaps your head and valves will be damaged. No way to tell if its worn so if in doubt, change it!! They last about 4/5 years, 60,000 miles  :happy2:

As above recomended at 4 years or 60,000. Get water pump changed at same time. There is no warning they will just snap & then big trouble & cost.
ED35. Standard factory condition.

On a cold start up you can hear what sounds like a "trapped Budgie". Am sure that its a comman sign (not always though) that's it's time foe a change.

Get it done ASAP as your car is 5 years old. It's which ever comes first, 4 years OR 60k miles.

VW mian dealers will charge you £419 for cambelt and Waterpump change, that's a pretty reasonable price as they are a PITA to get to so def' get both done as the same time.

Seems to say its £479 now  :sad1:. Was only £419 2 months when I did mine, so if you get it done, you should ask about that increase IMO.

No noise at all on start up just starts tapping when warm. Cheers for the advice, the info on the forum is excellent!

Welcome.

Take your baby to VW or an independent garage who specialise in VAG cars, they'll be a little bit cheaper, although probably not much.

We've all heard stories of belts lasting over 100/150/200k miles. Some people treat their cars like sh1t and get away with it, but most don't. There's a bloke in my office who swills pints, chuffs fags, and has a HUGE fry EVERY morning. He's obese and probably in his late 40's. Us lads always marvel at his constitution, but I'd say when he fails it'll be catastrophic.

Your belt could fail at any time (they don't usually snap-the rubber teeth shear off). You'll be stranded on the roadside, need a tow and then need an engine rebuild or a new head. This will cost you thousands!

Rubber perishes over time - you've probably seen an old bike tyre which is all cracked - same thing. The belt itself is kevlar reinforced so won't snap, but the teeth are good old rubber and will fail.
Some engines are 'non-interference' which means there will be no valve damage if a belt fails. The GTI has an 'interference' engine so will eat itself :scared:.

Now you have some knowledge of what nastiness could happen, you'll always have a niggling doubt when driving your pride and joy. We know you'll be getting it done soon! :smiley:

I had my cambelt and tensioner changed under warranty at 35k miles, 2 yrs ago. They didn't do the water pump at the time so this has never been done. Do you think I ought to have it changed or just leave it? :scared:

Personally I would leave it because of the expense of getting to it. Can't believe they didn't change it when the belt was done.

As long as you check your car and have a look for any signs of a coolant leak and/or noise from the pump. First sign of a leak get it done immediately. If the pump fails your coolant isnt being cycled therefore the engine doesn't cool and eventually overheats and cracks the head or blows the gasket.

Spot on, that's what I meant to put.  :laugh:

No I don't have a sound clip, sorry but if you heard it you would know. Only seems to happen on cold starts and last for  a couple of minutes then the sound is gone. After having the Camebelt/Waterpump changed on my car the sound was no more.
