Manual or DSG?

Im on the hunt for a decent gti with DSG, but a few people now have told me to sway away from DSG on used (out of warranty) cars as it can be problematic and costly. So is it better to stay to a manual?

I dont see you should stay away from DSG, manual's have their fair share of problems - ok DSG's can be more expensive if they do happen to go wrong but they are pretty reliable.

Wouldn't put me off.

In terms of enjoyment, I tried a 'non-paddle' DSG car and didn't like it, but when I tried a paddle shift DSG it all made sense and I don't think I'd go back to a manual out of choice now.

From a reliability point of view, my understanding is they are very strong boxes if serviced properly  :happy2:
Octavia Vrs MKII - KO4, forge twintercooler, S3 Injectors, APR HPFP, RS4 FP Valve, Pipeworx 3'' DP and Sports cat, Piper non res exhuast, ITG Maxogen, Quaife Dif, sachs clutch kit, NQSBBBK with RS4-2 pads, H&R SS Coilovers with adjustable koni inserts.
Good for 328 BHP on JKM's rollers !!

Some cars with DSG without paddles are ok (diesels) but I must admit the Petrol engines are better with paddles for a better manual experience.

I'd go as far as saying that in the long term, DSG boxes are more reliable because of all the self-protective measures.

They do need their own oil & filter change servicing about every 40k(?) miles and it needs doing by a specialist (VW approved).

Furthermore with more DSG software becoming available it can be even closer to the same as driving a Manual.

I hear of far more problems with manual clutches slipping and needing replacing than the DSG boxes. Failures on DSG boxes are few and far between and as RR says are usually down to poor maintenance. If there does happen to be a fault with the DSG it is most likely to occur during warranty and have been sorted. :smiley:

Right, ok. So every gti i find with DSG, should of had a service by the latest, 40k miles. Otherwise stay away?

Well having both a manual and a DSG I can see advantages to both. No matter what anyone says I feel far more in control in my manual but love the cruising ability of the DSG.

If I wanted a spirited drive I would choose the manual every time!  :happy2:

What i want is a fun drive. If i got DSG i dont know if it would just be a novelty at first and then just left in auto all the time.

....Methinks that if you start doing what Hurdy and myself do and drive mostly in M-mode with the paddles in DSG, you'll grow to prefer it.

Running DSG in D the whole time is a complete waste imo.

....Yes. Think and shift exactly when you would a conventional Manual except that you can do it with the paddle shifters and don't need to use your left foot.
