Hi,

As per the title I cannot decide which is for me, I was hoping some of you guru's could assist me.

I am looking to get a '07-'08 Golf TDI GT, What I cant decide on is if I should get the 140 or 170 bhp.

Is there a massive difference between the two?

And what does it mean for the likes of MPG-Insurance-tax etc?

Is the DSG gearbox one to go for? or stick to manual?

Im selling off my car to get a Golf as to save quite a few pounds a month on fuel so these litttle details are very useful to me.

Sorry for the noob questions

Thanks

if you do short trips go for the 140 as the 170 has dpf and likes longer trips

How much can the 170 be mapped too, is the 170 the 4 motion version ?

My work route is 30 miles each way, at a steady 50-55 mph virtually no stop start, does that still favour the 140?

thanks as well!

I have a mapped 170 which is running 216bhp/464nm. That is with the dpf removed. As far as I'm aware they never did a 170 4mo but they did in the 140. Quite rare though I think.

I have a 170 and only a 6 mile trip to work and home again. I have never had any DPF issues and as long as you give it a blast when you get the chance you should be fine. Your journey should not create any issues. The newer 140's also have DPF so don't let that argument sway your decision. Not much difference in insurance but mpg is obviously lower.
The 140 can map to 170-180 but if it has a dpf why not get the 170 and map that to around 200.
There will be arguments for both but if you can afford it then go 170 as it has bags of torque and is a hoot. Drive them both, back to back if you can and see which you prefer is the best answer. They are both great just the 170 is a bit faster, thirstier and better. lol

There were a few issues tuning the 170 due to the dpf but I think most reputable tuners can get around it now.

I settled on the 170. Bought mine about three weeks and think it is great. Excellent power and runs on average 500 miles to a tank on my daily 80 mile commute.

Well here it is, My shiny new GT Sport only 31k on the clock and FVWSH, Id say near mint condition and pampered thoughout its life!

Im very happy its a bit of a beast and seems to be the perfect car, although as I say that the exhaust gas warning lamp came on earlier.....

I have spoken to the dealer who said we can get it fixed on warrenty no worries but until then has anyone got some advise to maybe solve this?

Depends what the fault is exactly but seems to be common on these. Its usually something along the lines of exhaust gas temp sensor, bank 1 , sensor 1. It's usually the sensor that's in the turbo which will require replacing. Mate at work had it on his 170 and another currently has it on his Leon FR. No doubt mine will throw it some point in the future.

Thanks matto, I'm looking to get it booked in with VW sometime this week for a scan.
I guess it's still alright to drive??
