Knocking noise from back of my Gti
« on: July 26, 2012, 01:57:18 pm »
I've got an annoying knocking sound from the back of my gti somewhere and looking for some advice on what it might be.  It's an 05 plate with 65k on the clock

Difficult to describe but sounds similar to what you would hear if the tailgate wasn't closed properly.  Tends to occur mostly at speeds under 50ish and more so when lifting off or braking.

It's definitely not the parcel shelf balls as it still occurs when the shelf is out.  Could it be droplinks?  how would I check?

Only had the car a month, and it's spoiling what is otherwise a great car!

x 2, but mine only happens when engine is up to temperature, and has only happened since i changed by exhaust, but whatever it is, IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!! As you say, it can only be likened to the boot not being closed properly!!  :sad1:

I'd say droplinks or top mounts...
Diesel Daily Hack.

Good to know it's not just me with this problem!  I think mine also happens only when up to temperature, as when it was at VW last week for a service I asked them to look at it, and of course it didn't make the noise!  presumably because it hadn't warmed up

I've got the stock exhaust, but as your problem has only started since you got the exhaust changed, maybe I'll get mine checked to see if it's the source of the noise!

Will be interesting to hear if you discover wat it is, ive just had a 25 mile journey, and yeah, knocking was bak, seems perhaps to b more apparent when the steering wheel is turned slightly, not sure though, but definitely eminates from boot area or under it! Must be the exhaust once hot, otherwise surely it would b there when cold also!? :-o
