changing highline cluster petrol to deisel
« on: July 26, 2012, 10:41:29 pm »
hi everyone,

been reading this post

http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/375847/2664035.aspx

and apparently you can load the eeprom using vag k+commander,  from a tdi highline cluster to a petrol cluster and the petrol one will work as a deisel one.

has anyone else tried this with success?

tried emailing the OP from that thread but dont think he been on this forum for a while.

want to give this a go this weekend.

I put in the wrong cluster and caused all manner of problems.  Don't rush into it, make sure you have the correct highline cluster for your model year.

I fitted r32 cluster to my tdi and it works fine. Obviously the rev counter shows a higher rev limit on the dials but the actual revs are still accurate. Everything works too bar the glow plug light but you can usee the ecu light ad s good indication.

Mine were done by Kalu on this forum.

Thing is that it's got diesel rev faces on them so the revs are inaccurate. And can't seem to sell the ones I got so want to see if I can convert them to diesel by swapping over the eeproms

Can you not get some cheap (lowline) petrol clocks from a scrappy and just swap the dial face?

I know exactly what the issue is and that it's an easy 'fix' but people find cluster swaps daunting enough, so I reckon they'll sell no problem when put back to standard.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Got .:R clocks in my 140 Diesel, have to find the right part number to get them to work, no glowplug light and revs are high but everything works as it should, looks amazing too  :happy2:

My local scrappy is saying minimum 40 for a normal midline. On eBay they are around that much as well

I've had like 6 people enquire about them to work in a Tdi.

giving this a shot today. Written the eeprom onto the clocks, message says its been written successfully. turned car off, left it for hour and a bit, come back and still got the old eeprom data on it.

just written it again and will leave it for around 5 hours now to see if it takes that long for it to be written properly.

will keep everyone updated.

Raz,

Is your thinking that all clocks come with the same hardware when manufactured, but it's just the dial faces and EEPROM  coding which gives them their specific part code. Ie, the American clocks function slightly differently to the euro ones, would changing the EEPROM change the way they function?

My original clocks were 961's. I bought some highline 971C which was petrol. And I also got a 971D which is for Tdi. I've put the 971D EEPROM onto the 971C. That's what I'm trying to achieve to make the petrol one into a deisel.

Since they are both 971's I'm thinking the hardware is the same except the eeprom data is different.

Got to wait now and see late in the evening if the data has been written.

no luck dude, just ordered a new petrol clocks, going to use the foil from them to make them back to petrol and going to use the rest of the cluster to practice changing the smd lights to pure white :)

All is inside software + little bit changes in eeprom .
