How badly does a remap affect Clutch & Gearbox wear?
« on: July 29, 2012, 11:37:47 am »
Hello all,

First of all thanks for all the help with my Sat Nav question, helped me make a decision on that. Now I hope someone can help me here. I have a Golf GT TDI 140 58 plate so mark 5.

I was looking into getting a remap done in the near future but keep getting put off by people who claim it killed their clutch after just a few hundred miles or a couple of thousand at best. Can the stock clutch just not handle it? I'd be looking at hopefully taking it to around 180BHP but I really don't want to destroy anything & shell out loads after due to the remap damaging other components. Anyone running a remap on standard clutch? If I need to upgrade to a more uprated clutch which one would people suggest & how much would I be looking at?

Cheers again guys,

Mr Savage

it's torque that kills clutches, not power

i'm not familiar with the diesel models but i'd imagine the 140 shouldn't trouble it's clutch even with a remap. most of the clutch failures you'll have heard of on here will likely be remapped Edition 30s

This forum is just amazing, always quick replies, cheers guys! Yeah they said it'd be an increase of about 50 torques. Which map did your girlfriend go for mate? I'm guessing they invalidate your warranty. Heard some can be switched back to Stock easily?

Revo can supply you with an SPS (Serial Port Switch) to allow you to switch between your stock map and the Revo map, i'm sure other companies do something similar.
Revo Stage2 - With Linear Throttle
Revo DSG
BCS Turboback Powervalve - This is a must.
ITG Closed Intake.. wooosh

Here to enjoy and help, with a hint of sarcasm, please do not be offended

Torque when mapped 317lb/ft. Not concerned about the warranty :signLOL:
The ST3/SPS handheld devices can store and switch between maps.

Cheers guys, £600 for a remap seems extremely expensive when I've been offered the exact same service for £250 though, rolling road & all.

Probably best sticking with the ones recommended on the forum (here's  a few):

- PDT (north east) - custom map
- R-tech (midlands) - custom map
- Revo (all over uk)
- superchips (all over uk)

I can personally recommend R-Tech as they will give your car a full diagnostic before and after and will custom map it on the dyno right before your eyes. They are a reasonable price too  :happy2:

Otherwise there is APR too.

Full MAP switching between stock and tune all from cruise control. Just need to make sure tune is available for your ECU and motor.

The main reason I asked is because I don't want to start to go down that terrible endless road of starting with a remap then the clutch needing to be uprated, then the gearbox struggling, then before you know it you've replaced the turbo, brakes and half the car and you're literally throwing money at it until you give up and sell it.
