RNS510 Version D - now what?
« on: July 30, 2012, 06:01:28 pm »
I just took delivery of a very clean looking RNS510 with the star button bought for £500 from eBay.  It is the 'D' version made in November of last year with the part number 1T0 035 680D (according to the seller) and the following  - HW 50, SW 3970, MAP V8.  Apart from the fact that the guy forgot to include the code card , it seems like a nice unit.  But here is the problem.

I have a 2005 GTi with steering wheel buttons and an RCD300 unit. The OSD is the older Midline version in red.  I have been reading about needing a new can gateway and see that there are dozens up for grabs on eBay at prices from £30 to £80.  I would ideally like to fit a microphone to be able to use the unit's voice operation ability but understand that a certain amount of coding might be necessary in any case to make everything function properly.

Installation seems straight forward but programming everything seems more of a dark art and I just don't know who to go to within a reasonable distance of my home (Chichester, West Sussex) who would be able to do both.   I have spoken to a couple of audio installers who seem a bit vague and don't fill me with confidence.

Apart from taking a deep breath and opeing a bottle of something decent,  what is the collected advice?  Thanks in advance.

Hi

I'm a bit far for you but I think VRStu is near you and can help you out

If you need a gateway I sell new ones for £68 Delivered

To get the voice control working you would need either a bluetooth kit installed or add a loom with mic

Thanks for that - and £68 delivered seems like an honest price which I may take you up on once I have understood what I need  :happy2:.  Presumably by 'loom' you mean just a wired mic connection to the back of the unit?

Well that has now clarified my thoughts and I shall be going to get the unit installed by VRStu as soon as I have ordered a can gateway from Eddie-NL  :drinking:.  But I still have a problem as the eBay vendor who sold me the unit and who said it included the code card has not responded to my urgent mails asking for the code - I will deal with him separately  :fighting:.

I did notice a handwritten sticky label on the unit with a 4 digit number written on it - could these numbers be the unit code or has the code more digits than four?  Also WTF is 'Free TV'  as the vendor claimed  'Free TV installed' in his auction blurb?

Free tv would mean video in motion. As standard when you are playing a DVD and driving the picture would blank out due to safety reasons. Video in motion gets rid of that and lets your passengers watch the DVD whilst the car is moving.
