Air Con ..... Gone :-(
« on: July 30, 2012, 08:29:22 pm »
Well I noticed a few days ago that the A/C wasn't as icy cold as normal. Went out yesterday and noticed a real change.
It was blowing cool air but definitely no A/C.  :sad1:

Checked the valves under the bonnet to see if there was any signs of gas...but nothing.

Just wondered if this was a common problem on the mk5 Gti?

Does anyone know any possible causes of the leak? Other than the obvious, stone through the condenser?

I guess I'm just hoping for a quick fix really.  :ashamed:

Got it booked in for a pressure test on Saturday morning.
Hopefully pump hasn't gone   :scared:

Thanks for the replies so far  :happy2:

So am I right in thinking that from the lack of gas something expensive must have gone, like compressor or condenser???

Is it not possible that it's just run out of gas???

IMO first get it regassed and let them put some dye into the system at the same time. If it's a simple leak the leakage of dye should pin point the leak
Without traction power is nothing!

Aircon should be re-gassed (or at least tested) every 2 years.

Might be worth going to Halfrauds and getting them to check it as its all done by machine these days so they can't f*ck it up. They normally give a guarantee were if there is no change in the temp it produces then you don't pay. But check with them first.

I got and AC Indy out to mine mate.  He repressurised the system with inert nitrogen gas to see if there was a leak.

I do have one that's seemingly coming from the pressure sensor.  I got a new sensor but it's an arse to fit and I can't get the electrical clip off never mind having the right spanners.

It's off into a local Indy ASAP for it changing I'll let you know how it goes but it's certainly worth a pressure test before doing anything else IMO.  The sensors and seals are a dam sight cheaper than anew compressor...

Mine was blowing not quite as cold as it should be... Took it to 'motor climate' in Birmingham for a regas and service... They took my car away, I got it back and they told me my compressor had packed up! (and that of course they could fit me a sanden one for £350ish)

On the way home it was blowing WARM air!

Had a look under the bonnet and the cheeky barstewardss had broken off the plug which goes to the compressor! Patched that back on and I've got cold air con again.... Be careful with these so called experts....

Motor climate have been in Birmingham for yeeeears at least 10/15+ and specialise in compressors and air con...specialists my arse...

There's a guy called Honest John, who writes for the Telegraph Motoring magazine.
He reckons that Main Dealers are notorious for diagnosing compressor failure (cost £1000-ish), when quite often its only the compressor clutch at fault (£100-ish).
Take a look on his website - www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/air-conditioning to find a nearby specialist.
Hope this helps
