My GTi went the same way last summer (and Audi just last week) on both occasions a air con service at the main dealers sorted them both out without any major expense

Dont know whereabouts in the country you are carlo but statller is sheffield does aircon, i fact its his dads business "autorads" at the side of him. If its totally fooked just ditch it, stock cooler will get loads more air to it then, mine is gone. :happy2:

Motor climate have been in Birmingham for yeeeears at least 10/15+ and specialise in compressors and air con...specialists my arse...
If you do find a decent place in Birmingham, please let me know.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I'm hoping for a quick fix Eccie

So did you just have the system re-gassed? Did the dealers say why all the gas had escaped?

Sounds good GaZ  :happy2:

The car is booked in at a local indy on Saturday morning for pressure testing and then dye test (if needed).

I might get over to Stallers If it can't be sorted on Saturday.

mine went last week, vw looked at mine today = new compressor

There's a guy called Honest John, who writes for the Telegraph Motoring magazine.
He reckons that Main Dealers are notorious for diagnosing compressor failure (cost £1000-ish), when quite often its only the compressor clutch at fault (£100-ish).
Take a look on his website - www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/air-conditioning to find a nearby specialist.
Hope this helps

Sorry to hijack your thread Monte, but just wanted to mention a problem with my AC which I'm thinking maybe this clutch issue.

My AC is playing up periodically and it always seems to be when I have first jumped in the car rather than if the engine has been running for say 15 mins. The AC button needs to pressed on and off about 4 or 5 times over a 5 min period to get any cold air. It doesn't happen every time and I only have noticed it recently (when we had our summer a few weeks ago!) I usually turn the AC on and off at least once every couple of weeks in colder months just to make sure it is working. It doesn't seem to happen at all when the engine has been running at operating temperature though.

Would anyone else say that this is the symptoms of the AC clutch going or the pressure switch. To me, it seems like a clutch issue on mine rather than the switch because it does work eventually and blows nice and cold. Just wondering if it is the pressure switch, would this not enable the AC at all.

The Pressure switch is there to protect your other AC components.  It does this by not letting it run if there is low pressure in the system and hence low oil and coolant.

It's conceivable that your right on the fringe of that limit and it's flicking on and off.  I'd get it re gassed and see how you go to be honest.  If it is the compressor then it won't make any difference but at least you've given it a fighting chance.

I've had the pressure sensor changed on mine today, just waiting for a re-gas.  I can literally blow through the thing so clearly mine's faulty and has leaked most if not all of my coolant out.  To be honest the old part looks badly designed and pretty shoddy compared to the new one.  There's a small washer that's perished inside the column and that's simply not there one the new one !

I've attached a pic of the old one but sadly i forgot to take one of the new...  The green washer in the bottom seems to be what's failed but i can't be 100% sure ...

Had mine re-gassed last year and all was fine until the recent warm weather showed it to be blowing warm air again  :sad1:, I've now replaced the pressure sensor and its going in Friday to have a full air con service done where they inject dye into the system and check for leaks.Fingers crossed its ok now don't want to be spending out on a new compressor especially after ordering 2 new michelin pilot 3's today ! Fingers crossed for you mate

There is quite a common problem with the drive for the pully on the compressor wearing out so the pully is still spinning in place but not drivingthe compressor, check if the centre bolt on the pully is loose.

I had the same problem on the car I've only had 2 weeks!

Had it regassed as it was empty then literally 2 days later it went from icy cold to a heater, my AC fan was running like the clappers in the engine bay.

So far the garage have replaced the pressure sensor and another sensor (the name escapes me) and fingers crossed everything is working as it should.

If your getting a pressure test completed then the faulty switch should show up fairly easily.  When he pressured tested mine you could literally hear the air coming out of the switch !!

Re gas tomorrow so I'll let you know if the switch was all that's at fault
