Baffled mate as to the cause ????  Its a 2007 Ed30  :happy2:

First we took the front grills off and tried some gas through. (it was totally empty before we started)

We used the leak test spray but couldn't find, hear, or see anything around the condenser.

We got the car up on the ramps and removed the under body plastic guards (can't remember the proper name for it)  :ashamed:

Thats when we saw the mess in the photo, and the cause of the leak.  :scared:

The hole in the compressor casing is nearly the size of a 2 pence piece  :surprised:





The VAG specialists I use, have never known this happen before.


Anyone here seen it before???  :popcorn soda:

The costs vary soooo much Matt.

An OEM one will cost £460+vat (cheapest)

An OE Spec one will cost £260+vat

An aftermarket one from ECP will cost £146+vat  :confused:



So if I can't do any better, Ill get the one from EuroCarParts   :happy2:

whatever you do, if your planning on keeping the car - dont get any other make than a Sanden compressor - you'll be back to square one with any other make and spending double the money to have it all fixed.

have you tried contacting VW and seeing what they've got to say about it? i'm sure a catastrophic failure like that would be covered maybe by goodwill if you've got service history with them maybe?

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but for your sake I hope there aren't any shards in the system as if they are then you'll be needing more than a compressor to fix it properly.

TBH I did notice ALOT of tiny metal particles all around the pipe work where the hole is  :surprised: (you can see it clearly on the photo)  :scared:

What's the worst case scenario?

New condenser aswell?  :sad1:

Can you recommend somewhere to buy a compressor?

TBH I can't afford to pay for an OEM pump  :sad1:

I've just been on holiday for a month, spending far too much....and then I came back and spent loads more  :ashamed:

The pump from ECP comes with a warranty, so fingers crossed.  :innocent:



I'll give VW a call tmrw, but I didn't use the dealers for my last service. They couldn't price match the quote I got for the 4th service + DSG service  :confused:
I'm not very optimistic that they'll help.

Maybe if I complain about the pump failure enough they might take pity. I don't think the pumps are meant to explode  :scared:

The one I'm ordering is made by Zexel.

Zexel are basically Valeo compressors that have been re-branded mainly for Japanese distribution  :happy2:

Am I right in thinking that even though I don't have the climate on whatsoever, will the pump still be spinning via the belt???

If I drive the car with the pump like this will it do any damage to anything else?  :ashamed:
