Which Clay Bar? (now with finished pics).
« on: July 31, 2012, 08:39:25 pm »
Have finally decided to give my car a proper clean, after several months of neglect.  Got loads of crap stuck to the paintwork so I'm in need of a good (but not ridiculously expensive) clay bar to help with the removal process.  What would you all suggest is best, and where is best to buy it?  Thanks in advance!

Best depends on what you need it for.

I would go with Bilt Hamber autoclay soft. Can break it into 4 portions and use one each time for the entire car. Uses water as lube though I still like to use Born Slippy clay lube.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I'd also look at a tar remover eg tardis if you don't already have one. If you have large tar spots, you won't pull them off with the clay - you'll just push it around and cause damage!

What are you doing about polish and LSP?

Whatever you use, make sure you warm it up before use and keep it warm, fold it on itself and use plenty of lube...

So the Bilt Hamber arrived this morning, and I set to work.  4 hours later, the clay bar was filthy, and these were the results.  Not a bad finish I thought, considering it was all done by hand...

And the beading ain't too bad either (there was no beading at all before I began)...

Good work, but have you done anything else since like an additional wash, maybe a polish and a sealant / waxing? If not then all your work claying won't be for much...

Yeh, sorry.  I clayed it, rewashed it, then polished and waxed.  Just need to keep on top of it now!

Thought you probably would have so I wasn't meaning to suggest you were a total noob, however it's always worth asking as you can then help out someone who may not be fully in the know  :happy2:
