Author Topic: Changing PCV and rear pipe, I gained 20% more fuel efficiency & stopped oil use  (Read 19628 times)

Just thought I'd share my findings with everyone.

I own an Edition30 with DSG box, I love the car to bits, hand on heart I'd say best car I've owned by miles, and I have owned a few.

The story goes, my other half and I were coming back home from been in Manchester, and as you do, sometimes, you give the car a bit of stick running down the slip road onto the motorway, all seemed fine and the sun was shining. We drove north for a good 16miles or so, taking it steady until we reached Accrington, we turned towards Accrington town centre which is a 30 zone and so we bimbulled along at or just below 30.

Now this is where, a blokes heart stops, and head spins, we came to a series of traffic lights and were in a queue with a few other cars, we set off and I thought I saw blue smoke from the rear of the car  :stupid: thought to myself dont be soft, and made a passing comment to the other half about it, as we set of from the next set of lights, sure enough we both saw a cloud of blue smoke, and it did indeed come from my car. Well you can only imagine the horrors going through my head, and of cause the other half asks, I take it that's not good, to which I reply, your not bloody joking it's not good. ( bent valves, blown turbo, turbo on way out )

So we continue and arrive home, I just got out and left the car running and walk around the back of the car, no smoke, nothing, I asked the other half to jump into the drivers seat and give it a good few rev's still nothing  :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: we switch car off and go inside and chat about did we really see it then, the blue smoke that is ?? So over the next few days we keep an eye out for it, I even got the other half to drive my car, while I followed in hers, and still nothing.

So onto the internet I went, and did alsorts of research from both sides of the pond, and the only thing I could work out was the PCV, as basically this collects gasses and oil valpour and throws them into the manifold to be burnt off, so my thoughts were if the PVC was nackered, maybe it was pushing/allowing oil into the manifold, and this is where the blue smoke came from. So for the sake of £80 for parts, I went to VW to order the parts, and they questioned way I was doing it, and said they had never heard of it failing, they suggested I bring it in and they do checks on the car ( Which would of cost me more ) I politely refused and continued to order all the parts required.

The parts arrived at VW, I collected them and armed with all the new parts, PCV and rear pipe, and laptop for install guide, away I went stripping old parts off and installing new parts.

Now bear in mind, my car had none of the symptoms a failed PCV, would show, it all seemed fine.

I took the PCV off and it was caked in oil in the inside, it was like someone had dip it in a bucket of oil, even the gasket was covered inside and out, clearly oil had been running freely through it. Nexted came the rear pipe off the back of the engine, and blow me down that had lots of fresh oil running down it, clearly something wasn't right, and this is where I new I had done the right thing.

So I changed over all the parts, my PCV on the car was 3 reversions older than the current part and the rear pipe on the car was 2 reversions old.

1500 miles later and I have seen an increase in MPG from 26/28mpg, to around 33mpg/36mpg, my fuel tank used to run empty from full at around 280 miles, now the best I've seen is 385, but now mostly around 340/360 miles to a tank, and so far no measureable oil consumption.

I would highly recommend this upgrade/update of the PCV and rear pipe, it may just slow, stop how much oil your consuming and the bonus of better miles to a tank  :drinking:

PCV valve cover to turbo hose: 06F 103 215 B
PCV tube to turbo metal gasket: 06F 145 757 F

You've fitted another older Rev L instead of N?

Did you happen to notice if the PCV check valve was broken?

Also the latest PCV that works is a revision N which has superceded the L. There is a rev P, but you need to change out the rear hose also with this one.

Also the latest PCV that works is a revision N which has superceded the L. There is a rev P, but is not compatible with Mk5.

They give me the latest on the data base, I just used the list as to what I needed, not for the part numbers. The folks at VW said a couple of the part numbers were out of date, and ordered me the latest ones showing on the system.

I just used the list to show the 4 parts I wanted

By the way I have a BSH blank off plate which doesn't use the pcv system so is it a good idea to revert back and use the latest revision pcv maybe it might help things lol

Why do you say this? Is the blank off plate better than the latest OEM PCV?

If you look at the VW race series cars they use the oe pcv. The old ones used to fail but the new ones are much stronger. I know since i fitted the N revision pcv my car drives much smoother.
