the mechanism in the slam panel might have closed and is not accepting the bonnet catch. Happened to me twice, get a screwdriver and fiddle about in the catch housed in the slam panel and provided nothings broken or seized you should be able to free it up. Then give it a good clean with wd40, then use some white grease to hopefuly avoid it happening again, worse case your need a new catch common problem I'm afraid.

Happened to me a few mths back, rang my Breakdown provider out, they fixed it in a few minutes, on the premise of course that you are affiliated to one!?

.
It is definitely a fairly common problem on all Mk5 Golfs to the extent that my VW dealer keeps bonnet catch units in stock.

Apparently the problem is brought about by corrosion. My car is garaged all the time she's not being driven and still suffered bonnet catch corrosion. Mine failed while at the beginning of not-a-cheap private trackday at Nurburgring and as I also have a carbon bonnet (painted) I simply don't trust the OEM catch and have added AeroCatches - Belt & Braces for me!

Super grateful for all replies guys "carbon bonnet"?RR lucky sod  :happy2: that's the stuff of dreams for me!
Anyway think I've solved the problem for now!! It looks like the catch mec and dropped by about 3mil off the bolts  thus stopping the bonnet from engaging properly but! Having said that I did have it all in bits and I so get with the whole corrosion thing. mine was solid rust on the end loads of G45 and white grease hope I've sorted it now :happy2:
Cheers guys

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago when i sold my Jetta. The buyer came over from Belfast (i'm on the South Coast near Southampton) and after 2 hours of checking the car over he went to close the bonnet and the damn thing wouldn't stay closed! In the end i had to drive to my local Skoda garage and get a new one fitted at a cost of £80!
