OEM rear windows (the darkened type!)-3 door.
« on: June 01, 2009, 06:52:14 pm »
Has anyone swaped their rear windows for the OEM darkened ones?....if so any part numbers please!
Also would there be a difference in colour grade for the darkened windows as mines a 57reg with the green tint rather than blue.(maybe a silly question as there just dark but never know if theres a difference in the late mk5's)
Thanks!

from this

And I want this

from the pictures it just looks like they are tinted anyway, would be a lot of hassle changing the back windows, when u could just spend 90 getting the rears tinted, i payed 110 to get my whole car done so shouldnt be much

The R32 has the actual OEM tints. Ive had all the film tint b4 and in the end they all get scratched and bubled! Wanting the real McCoy guys n girls!
(shame the previous owner never specd it :sad1: :sad1:) Also the rear mk5 window shows white lines up when tinted.

I think the side windows are bonded in, could be wrong though.  :fighting2:

Think your right about the bonding, from what I've seen the early Gti's have a black seal around them, where as late Gti's don't!

Aye, i was looking to retro fit the surround trim off the older models, as the rear windows on the newer models look like they are missing something, it bugs the hell out of me. I even tried to get some vinyl on the bottom of the window to carry the lines through, but they gave up trying to fit it after 20 mins  :rolleye:

Yup, me, though just the tailgate glass and not the rear side windows.

Also would there be a difference in colour grade for the darkened windows as mines a 57reg with the green tint rather than blue.(maybe a silly question as there just dark but never know if theres a difference in the late mk5's)

OK, the early Mk5 GTIs and R32s had a blue tint (PR: 4KQ) - this was before the privacy glass appeared on the options list.  From 2007ish, the blue tint was droped and all Mk5s (even the poverty spec ones) had/have green tinted windows (PR: 4KC).  The privacy glass is merely a 'black on green' if that makes sense.  (PR: 4KF)

Part numbers & ETKA prices:

1K6 845 051 K - green tint - £147
1K6 845 051 L - GTI/R32 blue tint - £184

why not just get them tinted???

Because film tints look shyte.  The rear screen on the Golf Mk5 has a double curvature, and it is very difficult to get the films to stick properly without bubling or creasing.  Also, like most modern glass, they have a black border which transitions into dots, then fully clear, and when the tint film is applied over this, it looks really pants, and quite cheap-skate.  All IMVHO of course!

I think the side windows are bonded in, could be wrong though.  :fighting2:

And . . . . . . so are windscreens, and so are rear screens.  If you go to a proper car glass window fitter, they will have no probs replacing bonded windows.  That kind of work is their 'bread and butter' work these days.  The only real issue on the GTI and R32 is the need to remove the rear spoiler to change the rear screen.  However, if you sweet-talk a friendly local independent screen fitter, rather than the rip-offs like AutoGlass, SilverShield, etc, then they could even to the rear screen as an insurance job, and you could then offer to pay for the side windows which are much easier.
