Hi mate, it's not just you, the messages just don't show on the RNS. They only appear on the highline.
I still think its an awesome feature of the original red matrix premium kit.
...just wish the Skoda 1Z0 kit I had to upgrade to (for the iPhone) had half the features the old premium kit had. 
Mate, check the Youtube, there is several video, where is shown RNS with message options. Futhermore, you can send/type SMS via RNS. My friend said, that it needs a newer Premium BT block, which cost around 150pounds on eBay, so in my opinion this option doesn't worth so much money. Maybe, someday. Monte, you could use app from Cydia source, which is called "Rsap server", with this app iphone works with RSAP units. At the moment, it doesn't work with 4s, but works fine with ip4 or 3gs. Tested. Also, there is a program for android too, but doesn't work with all android phones. As I know, it works fine with Samsung ( all, including SG2,3 ) and HTC phones ( single core only, one x, sensation don't work ).
