The Golf, whether GTI, Ed30, GT, or R version, is a very hard act to follow unless you want/need a car type which is quite different. It's not too big, it seats 4/5, it's reliable and well built, it's fairly fast (whether standard or tuned), it's reasonably economical to run, it has a good load capacity and is more practical for a small family than those who before having the experience of having babies tend to give it credit for (at least as a 5-door).
Jeremy Clarkson was right when he said that the Golf GTI (and its derivatives) was perfect whether for carrying a chest of draws or for doing the school run and then screaming home like a professional rally driver!
