Subaru BRZ or Toyota GT86
« on: August 12, 2012, 08:56:43 am »
Saw a friend last night who's running a BRZ now - really rated it, the design behind it sounds interesting.  Came from a Mk6 GTI, he's said its close to a Lotus Elise type feel but in a more everyday car - he's has a few Elise's, latest S4, Z4M, 130M so IMO a he's got some experience to compare it too.

Engine sounds sweet, although more power wouldn't go a miss.  Sounds there are some tuning options on the horizon though.  Subaru seem to be limiting their supply where as Toyota not so much.

I was quite impressed, be interesting to see what the Subaru STI version and Toyota TRD actually do bring

I like the look of them - and they have a really low point of gravity so handle excellently apparently.

Can't help but feel they should have more power too though... 200 horses doesn't seem that much these days, but I can imagine they are fun to drive! :happy2:

I think we all know it needs more power, even my mate said so but the fun driving experience makes up for it - when they release an STI version he said he will swap it for that.

He's running this one in and still getting 40MPG on a commute to work which he was impressed at - not that fuel consumption was a key factor, just a bonus.

The planned future versions look even better, shame the estimated price could be £40k - a bit of a jump!

i really like them - the only question is which one to have

i reckon the Toyota will hold it's value better, but the Subaru has the nicer badge for petrol heads.

I really, really like them. So what if they're not going to break the sound barrier... they're still plenty quick enough and the way they carry speed through corners puts other stuff to shame. Plus, in a world of FWD/AWD... it makes a nice change to see a fun RWD competing with the hot hatch market.

Let's face it, we don't have straight roads in GB, so is 1/4 mile pace really that important?

Despite the rave reviews, I still reckon they'll depreciate like a rotting peach, so it'll be a nice cheap "drive to the track and enjoy it" car in a few years.  :happy2:

It will probably be like the MX-5, pretty soon the blower kits will start appearing.

Gazoo already has a twincharged kit on the go, 320bhp!

That said, it's a fair bit lighter than that Clio 200 I had, and I used to drive around things in that like they were standing still - if this handles as well, it won't feel slow at all.

From what I gather is handles really well - suppose it should, its been designed that way.  Speed isn't everything like you say, the Elise isn't the quickest thing in the world but driving is great fun and enough for what it is.

tempted myself, look better in the flesh.

I'm looking forward to seeing this car as a Long Term test car, see how it stacks up in everyday life, rather than on idyllic roads.

it hadn't actually occurred to me that you can get a Cayman for similar money

and i take his point about it being used and your purchase not being backed by a warranty, but when the new Cayman is released, the near-new cars will drop in value and then i'm not sure the same argument applies

tough choice really. i'd probably end up with the Porsche
