I think the time has come... to actually stop modding!
« on: August 14, 2012, 12:09:32 pm »
I have had my Eddie for 2 years soon and I did a very silly thing and actually looked at how much money have spent on modding  :rolleye: do i regret it? no, of course not but I am considering calling it a day and actually trying to save again with some of the savings going into a Golf R/RS3 pot

I have a few parts still to be fitted by Steve P/PDT and committed to the super pro GB with Alex but apart from getting window tints and a Polar FIS that is it.

Or.... will I be so weak willed like a fat kid trying to lose weight who cant give up sweets and be lured back for

Haha funnily enough I was chatting to a mate this morning, and added up what i've spent just on parts this year(not including fitting/services/misc. items) and it came to just over £4k... which has made me think that maybe I shouldn't be spending anymore at the moment... *gulp*

I really don't want to calculate what I have spent modding for the last 7 years! No regrets and still enjoying every single mile after 102,000.

I know it doesn't make financial sense but there's more to life than just money.

People at work take the pee all the time out of me for my spending.
But those same people drink, smoke and go clubbing.
My brother in law has a £1500 per year golf club membership. The car is a hobby, not an investment.
And each time I mod my car it gives the same feeling I get when I buy a new car. :happy2:

I would say I've spent a small amount on my golf, the main being alloy refurb and engine map.im not really into modding or passionate about doing up golfs like a lot of you on here as prefer to spend my cash on other things ie (going out, getting smashed most wkends, going gym as I'm always there and going away 5 times a year. The question is for all u golf nerds  :signLOL: where does it end. I don't think it does and have seen some take it abit to far adding body kits and graphics all over there  Chav wagons cause thats the only thing left for them to do.

Each to thier own but to be fair i don't think there are any chav wagons on here  :signLOL: most people keep the cars looking very subtle and its mainly just remaps, wheels and unseen mods like suspension, brakes, xenons etc

Definitelt not seen any hideous body kits or stickers and graphics all over the place, sure some have spent many thousands on thier cars but we're all different and i enjoy the diversity of styles and budgets people show on here  :happy2:

....My excuse is that I did all the going out and getting stoned (weed not alcohol) etc when I was younger and now that I have matured (OAP if you didn't already know) I like to mod my car, but only in ways which enhance my enjoyment of it.

oh i agree, it is not an investment you do it for the enjoyment etc etc.

only reason why i think i might call it a day here is because -

a.) have only ever bought cars cash and I will need a fair bit of cash for an RS3 or a Golf R in a few years. i dont want to be in a position where RS3's have dropped to say 18-20k and i dont have the funds to make that choice if i choose to do so

b.) I dont want to go stage 3 or Loba hybrid because, quite frankly, stg 2+ is quick enough on a FWD Golf, unless you are using it as a track weapon which I am not.

....I agree.

Your answer a) shows you are much more sensible (mature?) than I am.

Your answer b) is also what I have stopped at too. Stage 2 is plenty fast enough for road fun (K03) and even for occasional trackdays if not bothered by your lap times. So I've spent it on handling mods instead.

Sorry Andrew  :signLOL:

For someone that owns a company selling all these parts I have shown remarkable restraint with my GTI. I am yet to do a single mod but they will come. That is more a lack of time to do it than anything else. I have only had it 6 or 7 weeks as well to be fair.

I have actually advised customers in the past to stop modding cars and look at buying something with a better base for the power and I think you are right with your ED30, stage 2+ is adequate power for a FWD car. An RS3 or Golf R would be a great base for huge power, particularly the RS3. That is what I am aiming for in 3 or 4 years time.
