Bit of help! Sorry most probably been asked loads!
« on: August 14, 2012, 08:10:37 pm »
Basically I have been on the forum now nearly a year whilst I've been on crappy apprentice money so have only really been window shopping.
But money goes up very soon and one thing I am thinking of doing is sat nav and other components first.

So I have a couple of questions to help me on my way as I'm a novice!

Firstly I have a 56 plate gti with what I believe to be the bogo rcd 300? ( 6 silver buttons on next to LCD screen)

I basically want to upgrade to the RNS-510 and have the highline dash so I can use all the functions.

From what I've gathered from general searches is I need obviously MFSW, new clocks and of corse the head unit.

1) is there anything else I need to make this work properly
2) I will probably be doing it in stages as they are big amount of money to be spending so which order makes sense
3) lastly and most importantly £££ obviously a general figure.

Thanks in advance gallo!

What I am getting with the order part guys is that would highline and nav work properly without MFSW. As it will be a month or so until I buy that. :)

RNS will work perfectly well without any of the other things you suggest.

You've just got to consider if you want an MDI for an iPod or Bluetooth a these are separate but obviously these can be added at a later date.

Only other thing I can think of is a canbus upgrade depending on what one you've got.. I believe the revision that works started being installed in 07 cars

Also I would say if you want MDI, Bluetooth is to buy it all over a few months and then have it all installed at once as it will be less in labour costs

You probably  get away with battery drain issues if you get modified firmware loaded to RNS 510 other wise you will need upgrade canbus (about £85).

I just wanted to have the highline because it looks cool ahah!
But ye Bluetooth makes sense so I can use my phone,

Am I right in thinking rns-510 around £600
Then Bluetooth I'm talking 100-150?

Last question what version was the better screen?

As far as i'm aware version B is LCD, version C is LED and anything above a C is also LED but basically the later the letter they increased the hard drive size and the processor speed slightly.

Sure somebody else will correct me if i'm wrong or missed any other main differences

That sums the differences up pretty well

I' go for upgrades in this order

Canbus
RNS 510
MFSW
Clocks
Then either bluetooth or MDI

A newer canbus will help you with rhe RNS

If you're on a budget get the LCD version. I've got version B and it is enough for me. Shop around and you will get a bargain. I paid £350 for mine off eBay. Just make sure you test it for a few days before leaving any feedback to the seller.

If you go for the LCD version then I would take this route :

2nd upgrade I would do is the highline dash conversion. It would work perfectly with the rns. Loads of extra features in there too.

Next I would get A bluetooth or mdi.

These 3 are the easiest to fit. Then I would do a mfsw but it will cost a lot. And finally I would put canbus at the end as it is such a pain in the butt to fit and plus you can still use the above mods with an older canbus. I upgraded my canbus and to be honest it's only made my startup a bit quicker. I don't know if it helps with reverse view camera quality but I'll see when I fit one in soon. I think newer canbus is also needed of you're going to fit xenon headlamps. All depends if you want to go that far too.

Have a look at a few units. Im sure someone local would have either one of the versions. See which suits you. But as you said in the original post you are on a budget I would get the lcd version if you can find one under £400

I've got one of the B versions, and I've upgraded it to a D version.

Like RAZ says, you can get these A or B's real cheap now and just upgrade the firmware.

I really would like a newer led version but saying that..... I haven't bought one yet.

TBH my B version is pretty amazing.

Where do you live Nathan??? In a few months, I might be tempted to buy a newer version, then sell you mine cheap

I think if I'm going to be spending £350 + then it make sense for me to pay the extra £200 and get the led screen,
But saying that if I could see one on the LCD one is use then that may sway my decision.

I live in south Wales, and from the amount of forum members by me your miles away
