Two swift gear changes to get to sixty mph and no launch control in a manual would lose over a second, so a 5.0s possible, but I doubt many will get that.

Well if we discount any traction issues, with a manual R, the only difference post launch would be gearchanges, so if your lovely R will do 3.5, two half second changes would burst 5 second bracket I'd say, as a guess.
That said the previously posted vid of two Japanese drifters changing gear (trying to match DSG times) and slamming home very swift changes was probably better than 0.5 secs/change.

This either sounds like a challenge for EVO mag, or 5th gear. Anyone know Tiff's number?

Of course my thoughts could be a load of old bullocks, as they say down the farm..

BTW Black badges look cool, anyone ordered any Mk 5 versions yet? (if they do them..)

It'd do sub-5.

If I can manage it in an arse driven car with a notchy 'box, there's no reason these shouldn't fly out of the traps... just a case of practice  :happy2:
Sideways yo!

Very impressed with the developments here John.

Is it safe to say it's roughly at a similar performance par to the 'HGP Golf R' out there? This is the one that sticks with E60 M5's and C63 AMG's in a straight line, rolling starts. I think it runs about 420hp.

I was going to link to some bits of it on the t00b but they're all drags done on regular roads so not ideally suitable.

This thread has made me look at Golf R's for sale........you bugger.

And I told my wife the Ed35 was a keeper....

I just like the idea of a 0-60 in four seconds in a hatchback.

For me I think on a bang for buck basis a stage 1 .:R has to be a fantastic proposition.  :happy2:

Not sure what they've done with their Mk6 .:R in truth?
They certainly did that with the MK5 .:R32.

I came across it earlier and wondered how it compares as I expect from a standing start there can't be that much between it and Hurdy's?

wicked, i think anyone on here who aspires to own a Golf R next will be most interested in your heroic exploits in this thread! We salute you... :congrats:

You aren't doing too badly yourself with that list of mods in your signature berg

cheers john, up to 360bhp now so called it a day.

sorry to ask a mundane, practical question in such an exciting thread but is the boot capacity of the R only 275 litres against the Gti's 350 due to the 4wd? does it look noticeably smaller?

The boot is shallower due to the 4wd transmission underneath it. It is the same for width and length as the GTI though. I prefer the shallower boot as there is less lifting over the sill for heavy objects.

....And of course that is the main reason why you chose to buy a Golf R.

One gear change for Revo Stage 1, sixty can be achieved in 2nd gear I believe. :happy2:

Not exactly scientific but it demonstrates the differences between the 2 boxes albeit on stock cars pretty well imo
