Laptop Rebuild Advice?

My old faithful laptop is now so slow despite a reinstall that it's time to condem it.  It's old and low spec (hp pavilion ze4800) but I much prefer it to the new wide screen faster one that I also have hp G62).  I really would like to get my old full screen hp rebuilt with faster modern internals, but nothing too flash - probably similar to my newer laptop intel core i3 etc).  Is it possible and what is the likely cost - please bear in mind I have no IT skills whatsover so I can't do it myself!!  Thanks.

No, just buy a new laptop.  :happy2:

Laptops are not like Desktops. Components are custom built for specific chassis, and often components are soldered onto boards. Its unlikely that anything would exist out there to fit in your existing chassis, and the cost would be 2x or 3x more if it were even possible.

+1 for buying new and +1 for no Alienwares

I bought my laptop from pcspecialist FWIW and cost over £2k but was still faster and cheaper than the closest spec macbook at the time.

Depending on if your hdd is a sata one then you could certainly speed up things with a ssd hdd. You won't get its maximum performance but should be quite a leap from your spinning platter hdd.

Apart from that I also agree with the suggestion of a new/newer laptop.

Thanks for all the input - it's what I expected, but not what I hoped for.  Looks like I need to find a decent full screen (4:3?) 2nd hand one to act as my back-up.

Of course they tout them as the best, there not going to say come and buy our crap product where you can better elsewhere. There are very few other custom built laptop makers that allow easy access for upgrading and the the best cooling solutions, there's sager and clevo but pricing is very similar to alienware. Warranty from my experience is the best i have ever experienced too.


its all about smart buying when it comes to alienware. My alienware specc'd up on their website was 2.4k  paid 1.6k, calling and bartering gets you the best price.

I think Apple has far more to answer for than alienware/dell will ever have to when it comes to over priced branding!

Alienware fill a consumer demand for desktop replacement gaming laptops, my machine will run for 5hours without a charge when i need it to and still play crisys 2 at very high (when plugged in)

Desktop machines i cant comment on however.

Although I do agree that Apple laptops are overpriced, the build quality and overall feel are among the highest I have ever seen in laptops. Really solid and precise.

Thats how i feel about my Alienware, its spot on in terms of build quality.
