Failed Revision D Diverter Valve or possible cambelt issue ?
« on: August 17, 2012, 12:19:28 am »
Been having issues with poor performance and low mpg for ages .Have struggled to achieve more than about 22mpg around town and 28 on a long motorway drive.I first Noticed this after my cambelt was changed last year and had been unable to get to the bottom of it.
My coilpacks were changed under the recall so next step i changed the plugs but still the same issue.Cleaned my panel filter and still the same issue.Changed my PCV and even though a small improvement in mpg it was still not as high as it once was, so yesterday i removed my stage 1 Bluefin map &  took my car into VW for their mechanic to test drive as a preliminary stage to getting the cam belt checked for correct fittment.Car drove as it should but still had the issue of low mpg i couldnt figure out.Did some data logging with my VCDS and car was producing around 235bhp as standard but still poor mpg.
Anyway to cut a long story short i decided to refit my old revision C diverter valve which i changed for a revision D as a precautionary measure. The revision C was in good condition with no tears or splits and after refitting it my mpg immediately jumped back up to an average of 27mpg.
Reloaded stage 1 Bluefin and took it for a drive around town this evening and am averaging 29mpg.
Have i reached normal mpg now or should i still pursue getting my cambelt checked ? Not prepared to pay vw labour costs to check the belt so will be checking myself if i ever get some spare time.

Something for me to check tomorrow methinks.

I tried earlier before I read this but it was to dark.

Crap MPG for ages, poor running and now poor performance.

Revision G is out now.

TBH I was never convinced the revision D could properly seal but it seamed to be working fine, and when I went stage 1 seemed to be ok but recently noticed unburnt fuel when giving it some beans on the motorway. Will need to recheck now I've changed the diverter. on standard map I could definitely feel the difference in performance after refitting my rev c.

i was going to suggest perhaps the timing was out after the belt was fitted but apparently, it is VERY noticeable if this was the case.

I know in this humid / wet summer weather we are currently having (in the NW anyway!), my MPG is alot lower than a warm dry day.

couple of other points:

What pressures are you running on?
have you changed fuel supplier? what fuel you run?

Rich,
Tyre pressures are whatever it says on the inside of the petrol cap, Think thats 2.8bar front and 2.6bar rear. Cant remember off the top of my head but i check the pressures weekly.
Have always run it on Tesco Momentum and the odd tank of V-Power now and again.
