Possible new car covered in scratches...fixable?
« on: August 19, 2012, 06:12:13 pm »
Good afternoon chaos. Im new  here. I've just seen a gti that I'm possibly interested in at the dealers. However it is covered in small to medium scratches. The dealer had promised that they can remover then. Buy I am concerned that the results won't be good enough. Is it likely that the dealer can have them polished out? I appreciate it's hard to comment without seeing them but I'm interested  to know if the dealer is talking porkies.

Thanks

More than likely they can take them out Depending on severity! If you see laquer underneath them then not ! if its just swirls then you should be fine. try to see if you can feel them with your nail if you can they will probably be too deep like you said though its hard to judge if we cant see them, you could always give them a chance to get rid of them and decide once its been done, just watch out and make sure the dont mask the problem with fillers
(happened to my mate) all looked well then two weeks later it looked like someone attacked the car with a knife !!

Plenty other gtis in the sea mate

Thanks. Some of these were more than just swirls. It's a Pirelli so there won't be many more around. But on balance I think the risk is too high. Thanks.

Best paying a detailer to do the job correctly rather than let a muppet at a dealer loose with a polisher leaving buffer trails all over the car  :happy2:

I would consider chatting to a detailer for a quote so you'd have an idea of cost and whether it's worth going for or not. Then you can use that to bargain and get the car detailed so it's as good as new.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Having had experience of this when buying mine i definitely recommend the advice from Frodo. The dealer i bought my car from 'sorted' the scratches with fillers so had i known then what i know now i would have not bothered asking them to do anything to them and knocked the price down a ton or so which would have gone a long way to getting the car professionally detailed  :happy2:

Some of the guys on here work absolute miracles with bad paintwork, so if the car is good, and as you say there aren't too many Pirellis around, then I wouldn't discount it straightaway.

Whereabouts is the car located?

I can either sort the scratches out for you, or sell you a Pirelli that hasn't got any!

Thanks again guys. Car is in Wales. And your car looks fantastic greeners but it doesn't have enough doors :( Yeah I know a 3 door is better than 5 but that's one of the compromises when you have kids :)
