Am i being scammed ?
« on: August 22, 2012, 05:20:27 pm »
Hi im currently selling a car on autotrader (dont worry im keeping the GTI) the person has said he has sent the funds to paypal but ive had a message  off paypal ? says the funds wont be realeased until i pay an agent his money too (as he is collecting the car to drop it off to its new owner).

Considering his money for collecting the car is £1000 it feels like a scam to me.

Has anyone heard about this or not ? the only thing ive had off the buyer is emails etc he has not viewed the car only pics

And he is very impatient when i dont answer his email striaght away

Scam.

You pay the agent and the agent takes the car. I imagine they then put in a dispute with paypal and get the funds returned. It's a variation on this:

Or they simply don't turn up after you've given then £1k.

I would not be up for that if I'm honest. Refund the money and walk away.

Ask PayPal to verify the email is genuine?

Not being funny, but why would you take PayPal on a car being collected? You're setting yourself up for a fall, in my opinion. You should only take cash (get him to pay it in to verify genuine notes!!) or a cleared cheque.

If/when he gets the car and opens a dispute, then PayPal will likely refund him from your account as you have no proof of delivery (as far as I know, only a tracking number is accepted).

Anyhow, seems really iffy.

It's a common scam.
They usually say it has buyer protection and some crap like that.
The email won't be from PayPal they want you to release the car saying that once they get it they will confirm with PayPal all is well and PayPal will release the funds to you.
Definitely a scam

Never heard of this one, but SCAM!!

As above, the email will most likely not be from Paypal so don't reply to that email WHATEVER YOU DO. Log in to your own account directly and see what's what. Bet they have no knowledge of said transaction.

....Sounds like he can't wait to make off with your money. Scammers usually are impatient.

There's a famous case of someone 'scamming' some Nigerian scammers.

Ask the police for advice and then you'll have something for the insurance company if it turns out to be rotten!

....Whereas that might help, why get involved at all if you get even a sniff of something potentially rotten? Even if you 'win' you'll have had lots of inconvenience and worry.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.
