Where to buy an exhaust back box for my GTI?
« on: August 20, 2012, 05:56:55 pm »
Hi,

Took my car into the garage today to have the brakes sorted out and he pointed out a big hairline crack down the pipe of my exhaust back box. He told me for the whole thing it would cost £359 for a new one. Apparently they don't do aftermarket ones.

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find a back box that's a lot cheaper? It's just a standard one I need like the one that comes as standard on these cars.

My car is a golf gti mk5 2.0 FSI 2005 no modifications

Thanks

I haven't bought one for my mk5, but I bought a Powerflow stainless box for my mk3.  It was less than double the price of a standard one, but came with a lifetime guarantee.  The plan was to buy each section in stainless when it needed replacement until I had a full system, but then I changed cars.

If (like me) you don't want to attract attention, then ask for it to be standard specification.  You can't tell the difference.

I'll definitely do it again when the time comes on the mk5.

Shadow blue DSG 5 door with leather, sunroof, 18" Monzas, MFSW.
Full list of mods:  Seat inserts and a VW bottle opener.  Each worth 20bhp.

Thanks guys.

Could a crack in the back box pipe make the engine light come on?

IMO very unlikely.

Well had the exhaust changed. Went for the stainless steel ones. Also found out that the middle section of the exhaust had an even bigger crack. Cost me a bomb!...

...now it's fixed though I am surprised at how much difference it's made to the drive. The car seems to have so much more pull in it!! And I can't be sure yet but I think my mis fire has dissapeared!!! Surely a crack in the exhaust couldn't cure a mis fire?
